Charles Eugene Mathis passed away on December 21, 2017.
Funeral: 10:30 am Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Christ Wesleyan Methodist Church in Bedford. Visitation: 1 hour prior to service at church. Graveside Service will be scheduled at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date.
Charles was born on February 8, 1932 in Jacksboro to parents, William and Eula Mathis. He earned his Eagle Scout during High School and also crowned homecoming king. Charles was a graduate of TCU where he received his Bachelors and Master's degree in education. He learned to fly in TCU's ROTC Flying Club and received his Pilot's License in 1952. After college he spent 3 1/2 years flying B-47s with the Strategic Air Command for the United States Air Force, during the Korean War. He worked for General Dynamics as a product support engineer and taught science in Arlington. In 1965 Charles went to work for American Airlines where he was the first Pilot to fly passengers out of DFW Airport. He retired in 1987 as an International Captain. In his later years he and Jo Ann loved to travel. He was an avid golfer, and was a Trustee of Christ Weselyan Church in Bedford. He adored his family and friends, especially his grandpup, Stella.
Charles is preceded in death by his brothers, William Mathis and Donald Mathis; and sister, Anita Williams.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jo Ann Mathis; daughters, Melonie Juby and Monya Mathis; grandchildren, Nicole Whittington, Heather Rose, Randi Ross, Mason Powell, Ryan Powell, Michelle Juby, and Charles Juby; great grandchildren, Katelyn Whittington, Trinity Whittington, and William Rose; and many other extended family and friends.
