Mary Ann Whitt, 75, of Watauga, Texas departed this life Monday morning, January 13, 2014 at Baylor Hospital in Grapevine.
Mary Ann was born on June 6, 1938 in Garland, Texas, the oldest of five children born to Rev. James H. Shockey and Ola Mae Shockey. She grew up and lived her entire life in the Watauga and Haltom City area graduating from Birdville High School (later Haltom High) in 1955. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert M. Whitt, in the spring of 1956 and the couple made their home in Haltom City before moving a few years later to Watauga where they raised their two children and made countless dear friends and neighbors that they cherished throughout the years.
Robert and Mary Ann and their children, James Robert and Mary Ruth, vacationed every year for almost three decades in their beloved Ouray, Colorado where they enjoyed taking jeep rides in the San Juan Mountains and visiting with the devoted group of vacation friends they made and kept in touch with on a year-around basis as they eagerly planned for the following year's visit.
Mary Ann was a joyous person, active in her community and active in her church and was never one to complain despite health issues that limited her activities in recent years. Her greatest joys, however, were in being a mother to her two children and a grandmother to her four grandchildren. This fact was made even more so after she lost her husband, Robert, in 2003 after 47 years of marriage.
Mary Ann continued taking an active role with friends and neighbors and with her family despite medical issues which ultimately forced her to slow down over the past year. She remained devoted to her family to the end and her legacy of selfless devotion will live on in the lives of her children and grandchildren and through each person she touched.
Mary Ann Whitt was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert M. Whitt; by both her parents, Rev. and Mrs. J. H. Shockey; and by her sister and brother-in-law, Loyce Marie and Bill Miller of Chandler, Oklahoma. She is survived by her son and his wife, James and Laurie Whitt of Keller, her daughter and her husband, Mary Ruth and Paul Chastain of Richland Hills, and her four grandchildren, Hayli and Hayden Whitt of Keller, and Garrett and Caroline Chastain of Richland Hills. She is also survived by two brothers and a sister, J. Ray Shockey of Richland Hills, Elizabeth Kay Shelton of Augusta, Kansas and Roy Shockey and his wife, Beth, of Keller along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
