Albert Utley Kane passed away at the age of 26 on December 7th, 1941, when the battleship USS Oklahoma was torpedoed and sunk during the attack on the US Navy Base at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii.
Kane, who enlisted in the Navy on October 28th, 1940, was serving on the USS Oklahoma as a Fireman 1st Class at the time of the battleship’s sinking. When the USS Oklahoma was finally refloated, a year-and-a-half after its sinking, the remains of its crew were removed and 388 unidentified sailors and Marines were, eventually, interred in group graves at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also referred to as “Punchbowl”, located in Honolulu, Hawaii.
On June 15, 2015, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency began exhuming the remains of the unidentified sailors and Marines of the USS Oklahoma, who perished during the attack on Pearl Harbor, in order to perform DNA analyses in an attempt to identify individual remains for return to family members. Subsequently, on August 9, 2018, Albert Kane’s remains were identified through comparison to DNA samples taken from two paternal nephews.
Kane’s remains will be returned to Fort Worth on December 5, 2018, and received by his family. A graveside service will be held by the family at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 11:00 am on December 7th, 2018, the 77th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Also in attendance will be a US Navy honor guard to provide military honors at the burial ceremony.
Albert Kane was born in Fort Worth on January 5, 1915, to parents Charles Utley and Ethel Cornelius Kane. He pursued an interest in photography and film making, often using his cameras to capture black-and-white scenes of north Fort Worth. Prior to his enlistment in the Navy, Kane was employed as the floor manager of the New Isis Movie Theater on Main Street in the Stockyards area of Fort Worth.
Kane’s father died in 1958 and his mother passed away in 1974. His older brother, James J. Kane, died in 1986 and his younger brother, Raymond C. Kane, Sr., died in 2008. Niece, Valerie Jean Kane, died in 1958 and nephew, Michael T. Kane, passed away in 2010.
