Alex Moya was born on June 24, 1954 to Daniel Moya and his beloved mother Judy Flores in Lamarque, Texas. He grew up in Dickinson, Texas. He was the big brother and protector to his sister Stella. The stories of his childhood with his sister are legendary and comical. After high school, he worked for AT&T where he met his beloved wife Mary Ann. Working for AT&T, he lived in Texas, Kansas, Minnesota, and Georgia. He retired at the early age of 50. He never worked another day in his life. He spent his retirement with Mary Ann. They were dedicated to their daily routine taking care of each other, watching their (really his) favorite shows.
Alex taught himself many things including how to play the piano, paint, and juggle. He could fix anything. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t repair. He was literally a jack of all trades. He loved the water, fishing, and playing golf with his friends. He loved to collect many things including antique toys, all things Coca-Cola and his all time favorite pin-up, Marilyn Monroe.
Alex got his start in running by running away from his little sister, Stella. He was an accomplished runner in high school and continued to run in marathons as an adult. His love for running is something he passed on to his grandson, Drew.
Alex was a kid at heart and it was most evident when he was with his grandchildren. He enjoyed teaching them to ride bikes, play pool, how to fish, unabashedly beating them at any game, teaching them how to juggle, saying tongue twisters really, fast, and playing in the waves on the beach. He loved to build cardboard forts with the grandchildren and they had some awesome knock down pillow fights. When things got a little out of hand, he would cover for his grandchildren by taking the blame when items were broken. This included windows, scratched rims, and mysterious stains. He loved his grandchildren dearly.
Alex loved his children and was always there when it mattered most. He always told his children how proud he was of them. He calmed our fears, dried our tears, and never judged us even when we had taken a wrong turn in life. He had a way of listening to us that always made us feel everything was going to be okay and constantly reminded us we were a “Moya” and that Moyas never gave up. He loved his children to no end.
He always put everyone else first including helping complete strangers. He had many friends, many talents, and did not like being the center of attention. Somehow, he was the center of our worlds when he was present. Alex always had a joke to tell, a story to share, and was always current on global events. Like an art form, Alex knew every back road in town and always found a way to avoid traffic.
Alex was a devoted son to his mother who precedes him in death. He often spent weekends fixing things around her house in Dickinson. He loved taking care of her. He is also preceded in death by his father. Alex leaves behind his loving wife, Mary Ann, his children Anthony, Lisa, and Eli. His grandchildren, Ladarius, Breanna, Sarah, Drew, Isabella and Alex. He had one great grandson, Miles. He also leaves behind his loving and very attractive sister, Stella (Dwayne), niece Juliette, nephew Josh, his best friend and cousin, Daniel, and many, many people who all consider him their best friend.
Alex, we will see you in the waves on Galveston Beach and on the greens of the golf course. We will see your smile every time someone bowls a STRIKE and hear your wonderful laughter when someone sinks the 8 ball playing pool. Alex was truly the best at everything he did. He was the best father, grandfather, friend, brother, and husband anyone could ever ask for. We will miss him forever.
