Althea Jean Bloom, our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, unfolded her wings for Heaven August 29th, 2020. She joins her husband, Robert and son, Larry, who preceded her as our angels. She had just celebrated her 96th birthday.
She was born August 21, 1924 in East Liverpool, Ohio. Jean worked at the ration board during World War II. She and Bob met in Fort Worth at a Christmas party when he was in the Army in 1944. They fell in love and were married during the war three months later, on March 5, 1945. They were dog lovers and had several throughout their lives together. At the time of Bob’s passing in June of 2012, they had been married 67 years.
Jean loved her family immensely and was so grateful for her friends and for her church. She also loved Billy Graham, George Strait, the paintings of artist Thomas Kinkade and was a voracious reader. When she lost the sight in one eye, she received an e-reader and was able to enlarge the print and continue reading. In recovery from a broken hip, she mopped the floor on her walker. She was able to take things in stride and move on. She had recently moved into assisted living after maintaining the home she and Bob built in Burleson 30 years ago, until age 95.
Jean had a take charge personality and was everybody’s favorite leader. Her son was an Arlington police officer and she went through the first Citizen’s Police Academy held by Arlington and became their president. She really loved baseball, joined the Texas Rangers Women’s Club and was elected their president. Jean became a beloved and very active Volunteer for Huguley Hospital and again, was elected president of the Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob; mother, Althea; father, Albert; and son, Larry.
Jean leaves behind her grandson, Kel Bloom of Burleson; daughter-in-law, Karen Bloom of Round Rock; sister-in-law, Eileen Binger of Seaside, CA; nephew, Ken Bloom and wife, Bonnie of Antioch, Il; nieces, Susan Kirby of Orlando, Fl and Christine Swartz and husband Don of Fresno, CA; nephew Harry Binger, Jr. and wife, Su of Fort Worth; second cousin, Joe Casterline of Arlington and his daughter, Vanessa Casterline, of Grand Prairie; as well as grand nieces and nephews.
She appreciated the good work done by House of Hope in Crowley and was generous in her giving. If you consider a memorial donation, please send to Crowley House of Hope, 200 N. Magnolia St., Crowley, TX 76036.
