HURST -- Aubrey Leon Sheppard passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road in Hurst. Interment: With military honors in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Bearers of Leon's casket will be Danny Sheppard, Clay Dan Alexander, Jim Harrison, Paul Harrison, Daniel Sheppard and Stephen Sheppard. Honorary pallbearers: Lonnie Hill, Bobby Fitzgerald, Mike Staneci, Denny L. Threlkeld, Don Helm, Bill Simmons, John Galley, Don Lockhart, Fern Bombardier, Buddy Meine and Bob Farris.

Aubrey Leon Sheppard was born on March 27, 1922, to Lawerance Doyle and Ona Mae Sheppard in the Wise County community of Willow Point. He met the love of his life at a Corona Naval Hospital while they were both enlisted in the Navy during World War II. They married on Feb. 14, 1946, at the famous Mission Inn in Riverside, Calif. He was aboard submarines in World War II, a U.S. Postal clerk, and served as the post master in Bedford.
Leon was very active in local and state politics in his early years, an active volunteer in his later years and an active member of Brown Trail Church of Christ since 1956.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann Drake Sheppard; his parents; brother, Jack Doyle Sheppard; and a sister, Malcolm Louise Culwell.
Survivors: Son, John Sheppard and his wife, Diane; daughters, Shirley Harrison and Dorcas Sheppard; brother, J.O. Sheppard; sister, Betty Massey; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
