Audley Andrew Mercer (Andy), 93, passed away Thursday, April 18 after enduring years of congestive heart failure, advancing to respiratory failure.
Andy was in the Air Force, where he worked in Radio Communications. He worked in the field of Electrical Engineering for several companies over several decades, and finished his career working for the FAA.
Andy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and finally, great-grandfather. His wife of 48 years, Jan, passed away almost 19 years ago. She was the love of his life. His greatest sadness was that they didn’t get to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary (plus more!). But, he chose to rejoice in the time they had together. After her passing, he cherished and enjoyed time spent with his adult children and grandchildren.
Andy served as a deacon in every church of which he was a member. He was a devoted student of God’s Word, and led a life exemplifying his faith in his Savior.
He and Jan traveled all over the world, taking many cruises. His favorite trip was to New Zealand and Australia to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Years later, they celebrated their 48th anniversary on their most enjoyable cruise, where at dinner one night, Andy placed a strand of pearls around Jan’s neck, knelt on one knee, and sang “Always” to her. The maître d said the room fell silent.
Andy loved music, including big band, country, and gospel. He could often be heard singing or whistling in the hallway at work, at church, at home, or out shopping. He was a kind, considerate, lovely gentleman. He will be greatly missed.
