AUDREY MARIE WANDLESS STEVENS
1924-2023
GRAPEVINE, TEXAS—Audrey Wandless Stevens, beloved wife and mother, passed from this life on November 21, 2023, aged 99 years.
Audrey was born in Galveston on July 18, 1924. She graduated from Ball High School, and married Jack Stevens (Kirwin ’39) on November 13, 1943, right before he left to pilot 30 missions over Europe in B-17s. When he returned from England in August, 1945, they began a family that grew to 5 children.
She worked to help Dad through the University of Texas at Austin to earn his Chemical Engineering degree. On their return to Galveston County, Jack was employed at Union Carbide’s Texas City plant. In 1966, she persuaded Dad to accept a transfer with Union Carbide International to Bombay (now Mumbai), India, which changed the trajectory of their lives. After 4 years in India, they spent 2 years each in Louisiana, Brazil, and Puerto Rico. They then moved to Corpus Christi and Houston, where Dad worked with Champlin Chemical. While in Houston, she completed her long-postponed college education by earning a BA in History from the University of Houston.
Audrey had a life-long love of history, which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was a highly intelligent, lively, wonderfully warm woman, with a joyous laugh and lovely singing voice. She was also highly competitive, whether watching her children’s sports and her favorite baseball teams or playing bridge. And she loved her family and friends immensely and received as much or more love in return.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Vera G. Wandless, her sister Gloria W. Remme and sister Dorcas W. Cowell, her husband Jack Stevens, and more recently by her oldest daughter, Alicia S. Davis of Atlanta, Georgia, and her daughter-in-law, Candy Stevens of Hinsdale, Illinois. She is survived by her daughter, Veronica S. Lloyd of Euless, Texas; and her 3 sons. Mark Wandless Stevens of Galveston; John Lang Stevens of Hurst; Texas, and Bruce Chambers Stevens of Alexandria, Virginia; and also son-in-law Kim Davis of Atlanta, Georgia, and daughters-in-law Sunny Hewitt of Galveston and Elena Ovalle of Hurst, as well as 9 grandchildren and 13great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at a date to be scheduled at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery.
While the family requests no tangible memorials, people who wish may make contributions in her memory to Freedeom Hospice, DFW Pugs, or an animal shelter of their choice. Her love for her family, and our love for her, will be our final and fitting memorial to her.
Rest in Peace, Mama.
