Benson Hopkins Wheeler

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2024. Benson was born on June 19, 1934, in Syracuse, New York to Frank and Catherine Wheeler.

Benson is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Storm Wheeler, and sister, Carol Wheeler Brenner. He is survived by his four children: Kyle Wheeler and wife Mary, Shelley Walton and husband Tom, Kristi Reigle and husband Eric, and Sean Wheeler and wife Kristy; five grandchildren: Amy Walton Englert, Robert Walton, Allison Reigle Wolfe, Meredith Reigle, and Benson Wheeler; and six great-grandchildren: Natalie Englert, Sawyer Wolfe, Ford Wolfe, Darcy Wolfe, Campbell Wolfe, and Nia Walton.

Benson attended Michigan State University on an ROTC scholarship and received his commission in the US Army in 1957, reaching the rank of Captain before leaving active service. He stayed in the US Army Reserve and retired as a Lt. Colonel.

For most of his working life, Benson was in the insurance business. He was a long-time partner in the Maxson-Mahoney-Turner insurance agency in Dallas. Later in life, he turned his love for the State Fair of Texas into a job he worked for more than 10 years. He worked in the State Fair's coupon sales office, counting money and distributing coupons to the sales booths.

Benson enjoyed his social and service clubs. For many years, he was an active member of the Bonehead Club of Dallas. He was also a decades-long member of Lions Clubs International. Over the years, he served in various leadership positions in the Dallas Park Cities Lions Club, most notably running various fund-raising events, youth camps, and a student foreign exchange program. Upon moving to Keller, he joined the Keller Lions Club.
