Bernadine Clinton was born on January 31, 1925 in Big Spring, Kentucky.
She was the first child born to Hubert & Annabelle Carman. The first few years of her life were lived on their family’s farm outside of the small community called Big Spring. It was a difficult time and the people in and around Big Spring were mostly farmers who showed great resilience as they worked very hard to provide for their families. Bernadine’s family had a great faith in God and trusted His presence and care over them. They were faithful church attenders at the Methodist church in their community. Bernadine has shared that even though it was tough, she has wonderful memories of growing up in a beautiful area and with loving friends and family. This experience played a big part in her life and she developed into a very strong and determined lady with a strong deep faith in God and the church.
Her family moved and settled in Oklahoma when she was around 12 years old. Eventually they moved to Wanette, Oklahoma, where she finished high school and met her husband. Bernadine married Leonard Clinton on November 20, 1943 and welcomed their first son, Larry M. (Powell) Clinton, to their family on December 25, 1944. They moved to Pasadena, California, lived there four years and welcomed their second son, Michael K. Clinton, on May 19, 1950. In early 1952, they moved back to Oklahoma. December 16, 1952, they welcomed their daughter, Sherry Clinton, who completed their family. They lived in Tulsa for many years. While the children were in school, Bernadine worked at Nathan Hale High School in the cafeteria. After the children were grown and married, she went to work for Otasco Inc. in the Accounting Dept. In 1981, they moved to Broken Arrow, Ok. And in 1985 she retired from her job. She loved spending her time in their large yard working in the flowerbeds she created. This was her favorite pastime.
During her years in Oklahoma, she and Leonard traveled to many countries and throughout the United States including Hawaii and Alaska. They also owned a time-share in Destin, FL and they shared it with friends and family for many years. Bernadine loved going to the beach where she enjoyed taking longs walks and relaxing on the sand.
She and Leonard were members of Central Nazarene Church in Tulsa where they were very involved in various ministries for almost 60 years. She held the position of Missionary President in the early years; was very involved in their Sunday School class, and in later years served as a Greeter for Sunday morning services.
Bernadine was a people person with a gift for hospitality and loved hosting people in their home throughout her life. She had many, many friends.
In 2012, Bernadine and Leonard moved to Ft. Worth, TX to be close to family. They began worshiping at Northside Nazarene Church. Following Leonard’s passing in 2014, Bernadine continued attending Northside and her ministry of hospitality with the ladies in the church, having them over for lunches.
In January of 2017, Bernadine had a tragic fall, which resulted in her need to move into the Legend Assisted Living Facility in Ft. Worth. She lived there for 2 years before moving to Eagle Crest Villa Assisted Living Facility in Azle, TX, where she lived until the time of her death. She experienced another bad fall on August 22, 2020 and passed away on August 23, 2020.
From Big Spring, Kentucky to Azle, TX, Bernadine’s faith in God’s goodness and His protection and presence never wavered. She shared her faith with so many and was an encouragement to many. She was ready and looking forward to her last trip… to be in heaven with Jesus, her husband and all her family and friends who went before her. She stayed strong and courageous through all the ups and downs life had given her and finished her race well.
