Betty was born 21 minutes, before her twin brother Marvin Leslie Jr. on May 7, 1929 at St. Josephs Hospital to Mary Bess and Marvin L. Wittman in Fort Worth, Texas. She had 3 siblings, Marvin Leslie, James Frederick and Margaret Ruth. She was United in Marriage to Harmon Rodgers (Rod) Fisher on December 17th, 1950 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Texas by Reverend Wilson Canafax.
Betty spent her early years growing up in Arlington Heights. She attended North High Mount throughout her elementary school years. The start of Junior High, the family moved to Haslet and Betty attended Avondale School while living in the Singleton Farm house (her Grandfathers home) in Haslet. She attended school in Haslet throughout her High School years. As a senior Betty contracted polio along with her 2 brothers. She was sick for a month and was nursed back to health at home by her mother Mary Bess, a nurse, and a Justin, Texas physician that came to the home. All 3 children survived.
In 1946, Betty attended Nursing school at St. Joseph Hospital and graduated in 1949. She worked while attending school at St. Joseph Hospital on various floors and has fond memories of St. Anthony's floor and Surgery. After graduation form nursing school she worked as the Emergency Room Supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital. She worked private duty nursing and it was during this time she met and married Rod. After leaving the hospital she worked for Dr. Walter Lennox, Dr. H. Logan Swords part time and full time for Doctors Armstrong, Grammer, Grammer and Thompson (AGG and T) Clinic where Baylor All Saints Hospital now stands. Betty loved to tell people she came from a family of nurses and was very proud of being a nurse. Her mother, her sister, 2 aunts, 2 daughters and a granddaughter are all nurses. Throughout the years she kept in close contact with her nursing class of friends and was a member of, and attended, the St. Joseph Nurses Alumni Association dinners almost every year. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her family was the most important thing in her life.
