Betty Burleson Merrell

August 14, 1936 — January 15, 2018

Betty Burleson Merrell passed away on January 15, 2018 in Fort Worth. She was 81 years of age.

Funeral Service: 10:00 am Monday at Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine. Visitation: The family will greet guests from 2 to 5 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bedford Citizens’ Fire Academy Alumni Association, (BCFAAA) 1816 Bedford Rd., Bedford, TX 76021 or the Dallas Fire Museum, 3801 Perry Ave., Dallas TX 75226.

Betty was born on August 14, 1936 in Fort Worth to Bryan Clayton and Mineta Laing Burleson. She graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in 1954 and attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas.

After being transferred to Dallas by a previous employer, Betty began working for Rowe International, Inc. as a local comptroller. There she met Bill Merrell and after working together for over five years they started dating. They were married on July 14, 1978. They later moved to Bedford where she began working for St. Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church as a secretary. She retired in August of 1998 after 17 years of service. Betty was also an active member of the Bedford Citizens’ Fire Academy Alumni Association.

She is preceded in passing by her parents; brother, Clayton Laing Burleson; sister, Mineta Burleson Downes; and husband, William A. Merrell.

Survivors: She is survived by her sons, Stuart W. Grant and wife, Keri of Colleyville, and Clayton C. Merrell and wife, Brandy of Keller; granddaughters, Morgan Merrell and Isolde Merrell; and grandson, Samuel Grant.
