Keller

Services for Billy Dwaine Potts, 86, of Keller Texas (formerly of Gainesville TX) will be held at the Lucas Funeral Home in Keller, on Thursday, March 13, 2025. Visitation will begin at 3:00 with services to follow. A family graveside service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, in Mountain Springs, TX.

Bill passed away on March 10, 2025, after a brief illness. Billy was born October 7, 1938, to O.S. (Pete) and Evelyn Potts, in Mountain Springs Texas. He attended Valley View Schools through the 8th grade and was the Valedictorian of his 8th grade class. He went on to attend and graduate from Gainesville High School. He earned a basketball scholarship to attend East Texas State University but opted to begin working instead and started his family soon after.

One of Bill’s 1st jobs was as a City of Dallas Fireman, with his main assignment being a post covering Dallas Love Field. Bill was also a terminal manager for Central Freight in Gainesville for many years. He went on to co-own Western Star Trucking with his brother Stan and later owned Billy Potts Trucking. His trucking adventures took him all across the nation, including trips to Newfoundland where his truck was loaded on a barge to transport the load to the island. He also made many trips to Alaska across the frozen roads of Canada. He was an “Ice Road Trucker” before being an Ice Road Trucker was even a thing. One particularly harrowing trip resulted in an icy hill side being nick-named “Potts Corner” after he narrowly escaped a severe accident when his truck slid off the side of the hill.

He enjoyed riding his Harley and was a member of the “Soggy Bottom Harley Riders” – an informal group so named due to having been caught in a few too many rainstorms. He loved watching sports – whether it be football, basketball, Nascar, or his grandkids and nieces and nephews in their little league and school sports. He coached his youngest son in little league. He enjoyed dove hunting and was a life long lover of Gospel Music.

Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Peggy Schumacher Potts; daughter Stephanie (Wayne) Lindsey of Gainesville TX; sons Steven (Mark) Potts of Indianapolis IN; and Kevin (Angie) Potts of Oak Point TX; three granddaughters Cara (Julius) Stevens, Laura (Derick) Gehris, and Natalie (Jeremy) Miller, five great grandchildren – Layton, Luke, Reace, Macie, & Cannon. He is also survived by sisters Jean (Mac) Wilburn, Janice (Ronnie) Harmon, and Ann Johnson as well as sister-in-law Donna Potts. Bill was also much loved by his many nieces and nephews and his large extended family of in-laws.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother Stan Potts and granddaughter Amber Cline, and brother in law Duncan Holliman.

Bill was the epitome of a gentleman, was patient, kind and a generous man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
