Bobby Murray

January 26, 1934 — August 8, 2013

HURST -- B.J. Murray, longtime educator, prominent member of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD community and principal of Trinity High School for its first 25 years, passed away Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, of complications related to his fight with throat cancer.
Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Hurst. The family will receive friends 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

B.J. was intimately tied to the very beginnings of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district in the 1950s through its rapid growth and rise to prominence in the 1980s and '90s. After graduating from TCU in 1956, B.J. came to what was then only the Hurst-Euless school district as a teacher and coach at Hurst Junior High. From 1958-1961, he became the assistant coach at the new L.D. Bell High School under Coach Fred Pennington in the newly consolidated Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district. Leaving coaching in 1962, he became the vice principal at Hurst Junior High and later the first principal of Central Junior High from 1965-1968. With this experience, he was chosen to be the first principal of the new Trinity High School in 1968 and remained in that position for 25 years until retiring in 1993. As the first principal of Trinity High School, he set many traditions and practices that continue to this day. After retirement, B.J. continued to be honored, being inducted into the HEB Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, and most recently in 2013 having the newly constructed B.J. Murray Activity Center at Trinity High School named in his honor. He will be greatly missed by countless former students, teachers and administrators whose lives he touched during his distinguished 37-year career in HEB ISD.

B.J. was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy; father, Jack; and sister, Lynn.

Survivors: He will be missed deeply by his wife, Janet; mother, Opal; brother, Ben (Phyllis); sons, Mark (Shawn), Mike (Jacky), Pete (Susan); stepson, Philip Blakeman (Jillian); stepdaughter, Kate; grandsons, Alex (Melissa), Drew and Matthew; granddaughters, Hannah and Kendel; great-grandchildren, Jack, Madilyn and Trinity; and numerous nieces and nephews.
