Calvin W. Seter
March 21, 1934 – August 3, 2017
Calvin was the 11th of 17 children born to Carl and Mina (Bakkom) Seter in rural Carbury, ND. Growing up on the farm with a large family, he learned to worship often, work hard, share with others, sing loudly (while milking the cows) and to appreciate the wonders of God’s universe. Early in his young life he discovered astronomy and an insatiable curiosity of nature and history. He often would wander off into the Turtle Mountains near the farm and spend countless hours exploring with his siblings or alone. Their nearby neighbors would comment “there go the Seter kids to feed “gathering chokecherries and soaking in the natural beauty of North Dakota.
He was Baptized in Turtle Mountain Lutheran Church, May 13, 1934 and confirmed at the same altar 12 years later. After graduating from Newberg High School, May 29, 1952, he continued to work on the farm until April 1955 when he joined the US Army and transferred to Ft. Bliss, Texas. There he met and married Patricia Conklin. His first daughter Shanda was born in El Paso. He moved to Salida, Colorado to work with some of his brothers at Climax Molybdenum Mining near Leadville, Colorado. Daughters Cheryl and Darla soon joined the Seter family. His young family moved to Hurst, Texas in 1967 to be with his terminally ill 17-year-old sister-in-law Dana Conklin.
Soon after moving to Hurst, he started attending Peace Lutheran Church. His faith and devotion to his girls remained strong during his divorce. In early 1971, a green-eyed divorcee with a 2-year-old boy moved next door. One morning the grinding sound of a dead battery alerted Calvin that his help was needed. Always a gentleman, this kind-hearted man made sure her car would start daily. It did not take long for her to realize God had a plan.
On June 4, 1971, Pastor Roger J. Neeb, united Calvin W. Seter and Glenna Gibson Carpenter in marriage at Peace Lutheran. And the rest is history? Not quite – the love story will live on in the lives of our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and countless friends. Thank God for each of you.
Calvin served Peace Lutheran Church as an elder; was a tenor in Chancel Choir for 33 years and after retiring from Roadway Express became a custodian for Peace. Additionally, he worked for the City of Hurst Police as a school crossing guard because he loved to “help keep those kid’s safe.”
He loved all types of sports but his favorite teams were Denver Broncos and TCU Horned Frogs. The Dallas Cowboys interested him – he decided he would work part time at Texas Stadium as a security guard to watch the games. His love for firearms and marksmanship soon earned him the job of commissioned security officer.
Daily reading of his Bible and Biblical history, working crossword puzzles and yelling answers to Jeopardy questions were part of his daily routine.
Although he often made-up strange names for you, he loved and was proud of each member of his family.
