North Richland Hills – Carolyn DuBose Zierer, affectionately called “Khaki” by her family, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2022. Carolyn was born in Dallas, TX to the late Millard and Irene DuBose.
Khaki spoke fondly of her childhood, especially her time with her grandparents who would let her and her sister circle anything they wanted in the Sears catalogue and buy candy and “funny books” at the local five and dime store. Later she would pass on that same generosity to her children and grandchildren. She loved to shop for Christmas – starting months in advance and would lovingly wrap gifts made with homemade bows.
Khaki graduated from Grand Prairie High School in 1961 and met Joseph Zierer while attending East Texas State College. They married in 1963, and had 2 children, Joey and Michelle.
Khaki liked to joke about about how she spent most of her life packing and unpacking for the many weekend outings she and Joe did throughout their time together. These included going to Lake Weatherford, Lake Travis, or the Texas Hill Country. She always made sure that her family had all the supplies needed and that everyone was well fed. She had a wonderful ability to roll with things and was a good sport about spending weekends sailing despite not knowing how to swim!
More than anything, Khaki will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her infectious laugh, her funny expressions and her animated stories. We are grateful for the way she loved us and made us feel valued.
Carolyn is survived by her son Joey (Liddy) Zierer of upstate NY, her daughter Michelle (Ben) of North Richland Hills, and her 5 grandchildren: Alec, Tyler, Matthew, June and Miles. She is also survived by her brother Glenn DuBose (Sharon) and several nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Zierer and her sister Connie Westerfield.
Services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst, Texas.
The family would like to give a special thank you to all the staff at the Oak Ridge Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Haltom City.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to North Central Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of one’s choice.
