Charles G. Eakin, a longtime resident of Boulder and La Veta, CO, passed away on Sunday, March 22nd, 2020 in Keller, TX. He will always be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, respected colleague and dear friend to all that knew and loved him. He was born on February 24th, 1927 in Pittsburgh, PA to Charles Thornton Eakin and Ruth Clare Gillilan Eakin.
Charles was a professor emeritus at the College of Music at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was an accomplished and prolific Composer having produced many experimental pieces exploring contemporary jazz, a theatric opera called Being of Sound Mind and a piece called Frames – each work depicting a frame from a movie, a clever tribute to his sense of humor.
He is well-known for his musical-theatre compositions. He has, however, composed in many media, including chamber music, electronic music, voice, large and small ensembles, and a series of works for solo instruments and for orchestra. His music has been performed nationally and internationally. He was also an accomplished musician having played double bass in the Army during WWII, as well as, the Houston and New Orleans Orchestras.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 1950, a Master of Arts in musicology from Carnegie Mellon University in 1955, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Minnesota in 1964. He was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota and Baylor University.
A longtime resident of La Veta, CO, he loved his weekly walk to the Bakery, participated in community activities and theatre, even appearing in the local production of Harvey. He loved the mountains of Cuchara Valley and was a prominent member of the community.
He passed peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his children Nancy Jane, George Argyll and Charles Thomas Eakin, along with his beloved granddaughters Natalie Julianne and Melissa Rachelle Eakin, Nieces and Nephews and his walking companion, Dexter.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer in La Veta, Corona permitting.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Education Through Music.
