Charles Lee Roy Thomas was born on October 6th, 1940 and left this earth on July 19, 2022 at 1:22pm.
He had spent his last year and a half at James L West Dementia Care Center, being cared for by those wonderful, caring people. The hospice team and the 11th hour team were his care givers right up to the end. They are compassionate, benevolent people who prayed over Charles continuously, making his journey home easier. He had a love for life and always talked about going home to heaven to see his Jesus. Soar high Charles!
In his early years he enjoyed the sport of competitive bass fishing as a member of the “Chug-a-lunkers”. He loved to go deer hunting and went many years with his dad and Uncle to hunt white tail deer in Presidio, Texas. He called girls fast pitch softball and was well known for that loud-booming voice. He was also called to umpire Special Olympics. One year he was led to furnish the whole team with new shoes. They all loved him.
He graduated DBU Dallas Baptist University with an accounting degree. Charles had many dreams of wanting to be this or that, but ended up in the family-owned business of Thomas Draperies. He retired at 75.
He was an avid golfer and when his back wouldn’t allow him to play, he became a Marshall at Irving Municipal course which he took very seriously. He had a small Christmas tree decorated with golf ornaments, but when he had to quit, he didn’t want the tree so we decorated it with nature ornaments.
Charles served nearly 2 full terms in the Air Force from 1958-1965. He was in Itazuki, Japan when transferred to Minot, North Dakota. He was awarded the sharp shooter medal and completed the Sentry Dog Handler course where they paired him up with Sammy, a beautiful German Shepherd. He continued to have a love for dogs.
Charles never left his true love, to serve the church and love the people and his Lord, Jesus Christ. The height of his life was receiving the letter from Gateway Church inviting him to be a Deacon. He served nearly 20 years and was so proud to do it. Another highlight was getting to baptize our granddaughter Katie. His favorite scripture verse was John 3:16. He recalled stories of going to church as a youngster with his grandmother and he truly cherished those times.
Charles had lots of stories to tell and could keep you entertained for some time. We’ll miss you Charlie!
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Madge Thomas, and a daughter of 15 years, Jeri-Gayle Thomas.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Virginia (Ginger) and her daughter Tracy (Tanner) Witt and husband Keith of Haslet and granddaughter Katie Herzik and fiancé Mario Deleza of Pflugerville.
