Charlie was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on April 4, 1934 to John and Cecilia Wood. He was born during the Great Depression and learned at an early age the importance of a good work ethic and perseverance, of which he contributes to his father. Charlie graduated from Holy family Catholic school and upon graduation joined the US Army with 6 of his buddies. During his service from 1952 -1955, he was a firearms instructor and later worked as an aid for a General.
In 1960 Charlie was hired on as an extra by UPS at Christmas time. This opened the door for a very successful career which spanned over 30 years. Charlie became a Regional Public Affairs Manager and was very influential with State and Federal governmental issues, a successful negotiator, and he was instrumental in the purchase of the first seven aircraft purchased from Braniff to get UPS in the air freight business.
Charlie was passionate about Lighthouse for the Blind for which he served as Vice President for 17 years.
He met Gayle, the love of his life in 1986 and they married in April of 1989. Charlie was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church. His family will remember his loving heart, caring personality, and described him as loyal, funny, and patient. He loved food and wine but mostly he loved his family and was a great husband, dad, and Poppy.
Charlie loved to travel, he never met a stranger, loved to work in the garden, was a very generous man, and was deeply loved by his family and friends.
