Dayana Portillo

Dayana Portillo, a resident of Godley, TX and formerly of Joshua, TX, passed away on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the age of 35.

Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on December 29, 1989, Dayana was raised in Texas, living between Houston and Fort Worth. She graduated from Godley High School and proudly earned her teaching degree from Columbia College. She went on to live her passion by working with babies and toddlers as a beloved early childhood teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Worth.

Dayana’s life was defined by strength and grace. At just two years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and ultimately, a bone marrow transplant—a miracle made possible by the birth of her little brother, Dylan Portillo. Years later, new challenges arose. Dayana suffered from seizures and underwent brain surgery to remove a meningioma. In 2018, her heart had weakened due to the radiation and she required a heart transplant—another incredible gift of life from an organ donor. On April 13, 2024, she suffered a heart attack, which she overcame with remarkable courage. One year later to the date, she passed away after a second heart attack.

Despite all of this, Dayana lived a joyful, full life. From the time she was a baby, she could charm you with just her eyes. She was cheeky, flirty, and always led with love. She loved dressing up, dancing, decorating, gardening, animals, and of course, catching up on “los chismecitos.” She had an infectious energy and a magnetic personality. She made friends everywhere she went—many of whom she met at cancer camps and the Ronald McDonald House—relationships that lasted a lifetime. Later, she gave back by volunteering at those same camps to support children like herself.

Her family describes her as pure joy, the light of their home, and the nucleus of their close-knit family. She shared a deep, unbreakable bond with her parents and siblings. Children especially gravitated toward her, and she adored them in return. She cherished her role as a teacher, where she was known by her toddler students as the “best, best teacher.” She often came home with handwritten notes and drawings from them, a testament to the love they felt for her and the care she gave in return. Dayana gave so much of herself, always putting others—especially children—first.

Dayana is survived by her parents, Mike and Mary Shorter; her siblings, Dayanet and Dylan Portillo; her sister-in-law, Emily Portillo; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Manuel and Elena Barrueta; paternal grandparents, Vernon and Juanita Shorter; and her two babies, Liam Lucas and Donny, who were called to heaven before their birth.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 19, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3621 Tulsa Way, Fort Worth, TX 76107.

A pesar de todo esto, Dayana vivió una vida plena y llena de alegría. Desde bebé, podía cautivarte solo con su mirada. Era coqueta, juguetona y siempre guiada por el amor. Le encantaba arreglarse, bailar, decorar, sembrar, los animales y, por supuesto, ponerse al día con “los chismecitos.” Tenía una energía contagiosa y una personalidad magnética. Hacía amistades dondequiera que iba—muchas de ellas en campamentos para niños con cáncer y en la Casa Ronald McDonald—amistades que duraron toda la vida. Más adelante, retribuyó ofreciendo su tiempo como voluntaria en esos mismos campamentos para apoyar a niños como ella.

Su familia la describe como pura alegría, la luz de su hogar y el núcleo de su familia unida. Compartía un lazo profundo e inquebrantable con sus padres y hermanos. Los niños. especialmente gravitaban hacia ella, y ella los amaba en retorno. Adoraba su rol como maestra, donde sus estudiantes más pequeños la conocían como la “mejor, mejor maestra.” A menudo llegaba a casa con notas escritas a mano y dibujos de sus alumnos, un testimonio del amor que le tenían y del cariño con que los cuidaba. Dayana dio tanto de sí misma, siempre poniendo a los demás—especialmente a los niños—en primer lugar.

Dayana deja atrás a sus padres, Mike y Mary Shorter; sus hermanos, Dayanet y Dylan Portillo; su cuñada, Emily Portillo; y muchos tíos, tías, primos y familiares cercanos que la amaban profundamente.

Le precedieron en la muerte sus abuelos maternos, Manuel y Elena Barrueta; sus abuelos paternos, Vernon y Juanita Shorter; y sus dos bebés, Liam Lucas y Donny, que fueron llamados al cielo antes de nacer.

La ceremonia de Celebración de Vida se llevará a cabo el sábado 19 de abril, de 11:00 AM a 2:00 PM en la Iglesia Luterana Trinity, 3621 Tulsa Way, Fort Worth, TX 76107.
