Derreth Lavin

October 21, 1940 – November 9, 2020

Derreth Lavin, 80, passed away Monday, November 9, 2020 after a several years’ battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Derreth Cyrena Jensen grew up in Auburn, MA. where she attended Auburn H.S., and Salter Secretarial School in Worcester. She met and married Edwin Lavin of New York City, a graduate of Holy Cross College, and commissioned Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

Derreth was a devoted wife and mother to her beloved three boys – Jay, Terry, and Tim, and later her beautiful grandchildren – Kaleigh, Julia, Sarah, and Leah. Moving to Los Angeles, California in 1973, Derreth instantly threw herself into her boys’ sport activities becoming a team mother and enthusiastic supporter during hundreds of football, baseball, basketball, and rugby games.

She was known for her stunningly radiant smile, infectious laugh, and friendliness that made both friend and stranger gravitate to her in all social situations. In addition to her fierce loyalty to family, Derreth loved knitting and quilting – making sure each granddaughter received a personalized quilt, as well as gardening.

As her dementia progressed they moved to Justin, TX to be closer to her son Jay’s family, and the last couple of years of her life her devoted husband Ed tirelessly cared for her.

Derreth was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and Jack Jensen. She is survived by her husband Ed; son, Jay and his wife Mary of Justin, TX; son, Terry, and his wife Annette of N.Y.C.; son Tim of Huntington Beach, CA; and four granddaughters, Leah Lavin, Julia Lavin, Sarah Lavin of Justin, and Leah Lavin of Huntington Beach, CA.

Calling hours on Tues. Nov. 17th from 6pm-8pm, and Services are Wed. Nov. 18th at noon, both will be at Lucas Funeral Home (700 W. Wall St. Grapevine, TX 76051), with interment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
