Donald Ray Horton born on June 20, 1937 to Elma (Elmer or Honk) and Alice Aline Horton. He was an only child and grew up on a farm in East Texas. He told many stories of picking cotton, gathering crops, and making ends meet the best they could.
He graduated from Enloe High School just north of Cooper, Texas. He went one semester at East Texas State. Then he began working at Vought Aircraft (LTV) where he retired after 37 years building airplane parts. After retiring, he worked for the city of Euless at their gyms.
He married Mary Evelyn Brewer on May 30, 1958. They were married 64 years and lived mostly in Euless, Texas. Their son Randy was born in 1959 and daughter Amanda came 4 years later. She was born prematurely but healthy. Mary had to recover from a stroke so Don took Amanda home to care for her. Randy was sent to live with his grandparents in East Texas for about a year while the family recovered.
The biggest pleasure was doting on his grandkids- Lauren, Lianna, and Matthew. Then loving on 7 great grandkids- Rylie, Brooklyn, Wesley, Cam, Luca, Maverick, and Layton, and his dog Boone.
His grandkids loved spending time with him because it usually ended with pizza and ice cream not necessarily in that order. Every year he would give all of us bags of pecans from his pecan trees.
He was a great woodworker. He made Randy and Pam a bookshelf and shelves for his grandkids and great grandkids. He gave the babies each a rocking chair that he bought and stenciled their names on it this past Christmas. They are greatly cherished.
He was a great gardener and loved fixing things around the house. Just last Saturday he put in a new bathroom sink at his house.
Most of all he directed his family to love the Lord and worship God.
He passed from this earth on June 14th, just 6 days before his 85th birthday.
He leaves behind wife Mary, daughter Amanda, son Randy and his wife Pam; 3 grandkids Lauren, Lianna and her husband Tyson, Matthew and his wife Jayon; and 7 great grandkids, Rylie, Brooklyn, Wesley, Cam, Luca, Maverick, and Layton; and his dog Boone.
We love you Grandpa Don and will miss you greatly.
