Dorothy Joy Gerald Boyar
January 31, 1923 to November 8, 2015

Dorothy Joy Gerald Boyar of Hurst, Texas, was born to Pattie and Jonathan Pope Gerald on January 31, 1923, in Ireland, Texas, and passed away on November 8, 2015, in Bedford, Texas, at the age of 92.
Joy grew up in Hamilton, Texas, where she was a happy, popular student—a cheerleader and voted Most Witty. After graduating high school she attended Tarleton State College and North Texas College, where she was a member of Delta Cappa Gamma, the OWLS Club, Tarleton Singers, and the secret society called the Purple Poo. On Valentine’s Day of 1943, she married her high school and college sweetheart and the love of her life, Billy Thomas Boyar. It was during World War II and Bill had been drafted into the Army Air Corps, so the couple spent a year stationed in the States before he was shipped out to North Africa as a flight navigator and mechanic.
After the war, Joy and Bill moved to a large farm and ranch in Hamilton, where they raised cotton, cows, and their three children, Bill Tom, Patty, and Barbara. In 1956 they moved to Hamilton and Bill went to work with Joy’s father and older brother, PM, at Mid-Tex Feed Mill. In 1960 they moved to Hurst, Texas, and Bill started a new career in real estate and insurance and Joy finished her BS degree in education at North Texas University. The following year she got a job at West Hurst Elementary as a third grade teacher. She later transferred to Shady Brook Elementary in Bedford and taught for a total of 22 years before retiring in 1983.
Joy was a lifelong Christian, baptized at the age of 11. And was an active member of the Brown Trail Church of Christ for the last 54 years. A woman with a true servant’s heart, she spent many happy hours volunteering, organizing funeral dinners, visiting the sick, and working at Open Hands.
Joy is survived by her son, Bill Tom Boyar and wife Ginny of Austin, daughter Patty Crowley Brown and husband Billy of N. Richland Hills, and daughter Barbara Tappe and husband Allen of Arlington; seven grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; six nephews, two nieces and a host of cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Boyar, her parents Pattie and John Pope Gerald; her brother P.M. Gerald; and her sister Pattie Worley.
Interment is at Bluebonnet Cemetery in Colleyville.
