Dorothy L. Brown, 93, was called to be with the Lord on Friday, February 9, 2024. She was born October 22, 1930, to Leonard and Mattie Govan. Dorothy, was one of eleven children, raised on their family farm in Lincoln, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, eight of her siblings, and her husband of 51 years, Joe A. Brown.
In earlier years, Dorothy enjoyed singing at her local and surrounding churches in the Texas Hill Country. She also helped on the farm, cared for her younger siblings, and enjoyed playing baseball. Later, she met and wed Joe A. Brown, and together they had eight children. She loved the Lord and was often heard singing hymns at any given time or place. Dorothy, also known as “Big Mama”, will be remembered for her delicious meals, beautiful voice, contagious laughter, and unconditional love for her family whom she made many sacrifices. She was a dedicated member of the Garden of Eden Neighborhood Association. While an active member, she served as vice president for many years.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Joe Ann Taylor of Fort Worth, Dorothy Brown-Sanders (Bob Ray) of Fort Worth, Shirley Hargrave (James) of Crowley, Steve Brown (Monica) of Haltom City, Beverly Black (Anthony) of Fort Worth, John Brown (Mirta) of Stillwater, OK, Leslie Richie (Tony) of Fort Worth, and Elizabeth Medlock (Lynn) of Fort Worth; eighteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sister Mattie Hodge, brother Jay Govan, and sisters-in-law Beatrice Williams and Juanita Brown; numerous nephews and nieces, extended family, and friends. All will miss her greatly.
A visitation will be held at 6:00 pm, Thursday, February 15, at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst, Texas. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 am on Friday, February 16, at City on a Hill Church in Fort Worth. Her burial will be at Cedar Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Arlington, Texas at 1:00 pm.
