Born in Guatemala City, Edith Jane Wallis was a daughter of Calvin Proctor Wallis, M.D. (1910-2000), a medical missionary, and Caroline Furst Wallis, RN. After her mother died in childbirth in 1945, Edith, her sister Caroline, and brother Richard, were raised by their stepmother Matilda (“Tillie”) Smith Wallis (1910-1990).

Edith attended high school in Norman, Okla., earned a bachelor of arts degree from Trinity College in San Antonio, Tex., and attended Princeton Theological Seminary. In May 1965, she married the Rev. Peter John Marshall (1940-2010), son of well-known Senate chaplain Dr. Peter Marshall and the writer Catherine Marshall LeSourd. The newly minted pastor’s wife accompanied her husband for the next twelve years to his pastorates in West Hartford, Conn., and East Dennis, Mass.

Edith Marshall returned to the academic world to earn her master’s degree from Boston University School of Social Work and complete additional training with the Kantor Institute in Boston. As a social worker specializing in family systems therapy, she was associated with the Lower Cape Counseling Center in Hyannis, Mass.

In 2001, following her marriage to John B. Roberts, she was a staff therapist with Perspectives Counseling Centers in Troy, Mich. After becoming a grandmother, she moved to Lantana, Tex., to be nearer her grandchildren Maclaine, Kaitlyn, and Samuel Marshall.

Edith Marshall Roberts is survived by her husband of fifteen years, John B. Roberts, two sons, Peter Jonathan Marshall and Danielle, of Keller, Tex., and David Christopher Marshall of New York City, three grandchildren, and her brother and sister. Two children, Amy Catherine Marshall and Peter Christopher Marshall, died in infancy. Her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Marshall, died in 2012. She is also survived by LeSourd family members Chester and Susan LeSourd of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Jeffrey and Nancy LeSourd of Lincoln, Va.; and the Rev. Linda LeSourd Lader and Philip Lader of North Palm Beach, Fla, and their children—six nieces and nephews.
