In Memory of Edward A. Sides
(1946-2022)

Edward Arthur Sides, age 75, entered into the arms of his Creator and Savior on January 23, 2022.
Born to Arthur W. Sides and Marion Appleford Sides on February 21, 1946, Ed spent his childhood years in Hanover, Massachusetts - playing ice hockey, lacrosse, football; volunteering at the fire department where his father worked.
For three years during the Vietnam War, Ed served in active duty at the US Naval Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he ran the base gym and was in charge of the news correspondence.
In 1963, he attended Alderson Broaddus College, in Philippe, West Virginia; from 1964-68 attended Plymouth State College/University, Plymouth, New Hampshire where Ed earned his degree in Physical Education and went on to get his Master’s degree in Education.
Ed’s 38-year-career began at Ashland High School, Ashland, New Hampshire, where for two years he served as their Athletic Director, coaching athletes in cross-country, track, and baseball.
From 1970-2008, Coach Sides taught K-8 students Physical Education at Henry W. Moore School in Candia, NH. He consistently decorated his school gym with themes, incorporating physical activities and reading books to his students to reinforce the lessons he originated. Ed served as Assistant Principal for two years during that time span, but returned to teaching and coaching students there, as his first love. Ed started the Candia school soccer program in the late 1970s and contributed to various stints as the boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, and soccer coach.
His “extracurricular coaching career” began at Central High School, Manchester, NH, and extended from 1976-1984. During that time, as the Assistant Coach (1976-1981), his girls’ basketball team won four consecutive State Championships. From 1981 through the 1984/85 season, Ed was the Central High School Head Varsity Coach and also the Director of the New Hampshire AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Program from 1980-1985 during the summers, taking teams to Canada to play at McGill University. In 1984/85, Ed was awarded the Class L Coach of the Year.
Assistant Basketball Coach at New Hampshire College and interim Head Coach for the 1988 season, Ed helped guide teams to several NCAA and ECAC tournament bids during the years, 1985-1993. His team won the NECC Conference Championship and the 1991 ECAC Championship.
In 1995, he resumed his role as Central High School Head Basketball Coach until 2005. His team won the State Championship in 1997.
From 2000-2005, Ed rejoined the staff at Southern New Hampshire University, formerly New Hampshire College.
Additionally, he is credited with winning four Tri-County Soccer Crowns - three boys’ teams and one girls’.
Ed developed his Jump Rope for Heart program, which the American Heart Association “jumped on” and is still a fundraising program for heart disease today. An educator who taught concepts through movement, Ed developed a teaching program on “movement to learn”- “Steps with Sides” -and spread his ideas via speaking engagements. In Portsmouth, NH, he served as keynote speaker for the state in the mid-2000s.
Loving to dance, he taught dance lessons and served as a disc jockey for various events. The Celtic Thunder and Celtic Women, along with Sarah Brightman’s and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks’ music captured his heart… Ed also loved dabbling in antiques, and for years had a booth in Goffstown, NH and Keller, TX. He never tired of reading about the Black Watch - Royal Regiment of Scotland, stories of WWII; serving Veterans.
In his Texas retirement years, Ed was a substitute teacher in Southlake Carroll, remembering every student he met by learning something about them in conversation. He loved golfing, going to yard sales and live music venues.
Spending time with his dear friends and family was a priority for Ed. He loved hearing of his grandchildren’s activities, playing games with them, holding them on his lap, and reading to them.
Ed is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine, and survived by his beloved wife, Sheryl; his beloved family - sons, Darrin (Christine), Scott (Gina); grandchildren - Mia, Noah, Kiera, Cooper, and Everett; his sister-in-law, Carol Lundin; in-laws, Bob and Mabel Emerson; step-son, Jules Renner III (Faith), step-daughter, Jillian Burt (Casey); step-grandchildren – Sienna, Maddox, Austen, and Beckham; sister-in-law, Jill Bream and brother-in-law, Dave; sister-in-law, Gail Chiofalo and brother-in-law, Pete; nieces - Abby Maxie (Mickey), Alyssa Hurtado (Ronnie), Avery Bream; nephews- Anthony Chiofalo (Kyndall), Eric Chiofalo (Marion), Nick Chiofalo (Victoria), Mike Chiofalo; great nieces – Emerson, Maya, Juliette, Mila; great nephew- Grayson.
A memorial service will be held at Hillside Community Church, 9915 Ray White Rd., Keller, TX on Saturday, March 5th, at 11a.m. A reception will be held in honor of Ed, at the church, immediately following the service.
At a later date, plans include a prayer service to be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Goffstown, NH, in Ed’s memory.
