Edward F. Stewart

October 21, 1917 — February 1, 2017

Edward F. Stewart, born October 21, 1917 (Toronto, Canada) to Frank and Rose (Halliday) Stewart passed away peacefully on February 1, 2017, age 99 years. Edward (Eddie) was a longtime resident of Arlington and Belmont, MA and Colleyville, TX, often visiting his son on Nantucket for many years in the summers as well as for many magical Thanksgiving and Christmas family celebrations.

He was married on September 24, 1949 to Anna Elizabeth Glynn (deceased) for 61 devoted and happy years. He was loving stepfather to Stanley Russell (deceased) and father to Gail Stewart (deceased) and Glenn Stewart of Colleyville, TX.
Eddie was very proud of his military service, serving his country during World War II until leaving the Armed Forces in 1952. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant 2201st Hospital Squadron of the Army of the United States, and was awarded the Victory Medal. He served in military hospitals in California and at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC. He also served as Technical Sergeant 1141st Medical Services Squadron, 1070th Medical Actys Group in Bremerhaven, Germany earning the Bronze Clasp to Good Service Medal from the Air Force of the United States. He was an active veteran serving in various roles with VFW Post 529 in Somerville, MA. Eddie became a naturalized citizen of the United States on January 30, 1946 something of which he was extremely proud.

Upon discharge from the armed services, Eddie went to work as a truck driver and was a member of the New England Teamsters & Trucking Industry where he served as union steward. Eddie worked for many years for the Mutual Paper Company and Ingalls-Cronin Co., retiring in 1988. After retirement he delighted for many years in helping out the clients of his wife’s Brentwood Beauty Salon in Medford, MA driving those without transportation to and from their appointments. The ladies resurrected his nickname of “Fast Eddie” that he originally earned in trucking, always being the first to complete his route, because he always got them to their appointments on time, and he always had a charming story to tell and a twinkle in his eye.
Eddie had a passion for sports.

During his Army career, he was very proud to play on his company’s intramural football team. In the 1960s, he was instrumental in the development of the Somerville, MA Pop Warner football league. A lifelong member of the Notre Dame Football Subway Alumni fan club, Eddie rarely missed a televised game, subscribed to the Notre Dame Irish Sports Report, and attended several games which were very special occasions. He proudly wore the blue and gold ND beret loaded with lucky charms and pins and had a fantastic memory for Notre Dame Sports’ statistics. He loved professional football and was a huge fan of Joe Montana as well as the New York Giants until New England got their own team, the original Boston Patriots, now New England Patriots. A longtime Boston area resident, he was also a loyal fan of the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. After moving to Texas, he became a devoted fan of the Dallas Mavericks, enjoying season tickets in Section 117, Row L, Seats 15-16, the highlight being his attendance at 93 years old of nearly every home playoff game of their NBA Championship in 2011.

Eddie was a wonderful father to his children and delighted in their annual vacation to Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk, NC for deep sea fishing, body surfing and his special July 4th fireworks show. A devoted husband to his wife Anna, they loved to play the slot machines and made regular trips in their later years to Las Vegas, Nevada. Both were extraordinarily lucky and always returned ahead of the House. The couple was known for throwing large, joyous Holiday family gatherings and their Christmas eggnog was infamous. Eddie’s care of his wife Anna in her last several years as she faced numerous, overwhelming obstacles, was a legendary love story of complete and utter devotion and affection.

Eddie was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church and attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, MA and All Saints Episcopal Church in Belmont, MA. He was noted for his daily Morning Prayer book reading and devotions, a kind, gentle man who truly “lived” his deep faith every day of his life.

Loving father-in-law to Judith Reny Stewart, devoted grandfather to Emily Garai, Anastasia, Vanessa and Carolina Stewart and great-grandfather to Caleb Russell Garai. Eddie was also loving grandfather to the children of Stanley and Sally Russell, Ann Russell and Judi Russell Mitchell, and great-grandfather to Erika Rajkovic (Mitchell) and Chris Mitchell. Uncle to Justine Glynn, Sarah Little (Glynn), Nancy and Priscilla Glynn, Pierre Glynn, Fred Stanley Glynn (deceased), Margaret, Deirdre, Leah and Anne Glynn, leaving behind several great-nephews and great-nieces.

Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 18 at St. Laurence Episcopal Church, 519 N. Kimball Avenue, Southlake, TX, with reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Honor Flight Network, 175 South Tuttle Road, Springfield, OH 45505. Interment will be at North Cemetery in Natick, MA in August.
