It is with deep sympathy that we announce the passing of Eleonore ‘Elke’ Yates, 82, who left us after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Elke passed away peacefully on December 1st surrounded by loved ones. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold Yates.
Born on January 4th, 1942, in Magdeburg East Germany, Elke was only 17 when she and her mother bravely escaped the oppressive regime of communist East Germany. This act of courage set the stage for a life of resilience and hope. She carried with her a deep appreciation for her newfound freedom which she later celebrated when she became a proud U.S. citizen – a moment that remains one of her most cherished memories.
Her greatest delight in life was her family, especially her son Ingomar ‘Kurt’ and his wife, her beloved daughter-in-law, Renee. She was also a proud grandmother, or most fondly ‘Oma’, to Connie Marie and Kurt Joseph who brought her tremendous joy. She loved her family deeply and always made time together a priority.
The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Elke’s dearest friends, Nancy Johnson, Kathy Scaff and Dianna Hall who were by her side day and night throughout her illness. Their unwavering love, support, care and constant presence during this difficult time will never be forgotten.
Additionally, the family would like to extend their thanks to Elke’s church family, her many friends and caregivers who were a great source of strength, with many taking time to visit, send flowers and pray words of encouragement over her.
Elke valued her family and friends so, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, love and perseverance that will continue to inspire us all.
May she rest in peace, reunited with Harold, and forever in the hearts of those who love her.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Church of Christ Mission fund in her memory.
