Elizabeth Orosz Ott

January 24, 1923 — November 23, 2015

Elizabeth Orosz Ott, 92, went home to the Lord on Monday, Nov. 23, 2015.
Memorial: 2 p.m. Saturday at Cistercian Abbey, 3550 Cistercian Road, Irving, 75039.
Elizabeth (aka Boske, Erzsi, Erzsok, Betty, Liz, Miss. Elizabeth) Orosz Ott was born in Salgótarján (an industrial city in northwestern Hungary) on January 24, 1923 to Sandor Orosz and Erzsebet Mazuch.
She was the eldest of 6 children. The following year the family moved further east to Sátoraljaujhely. This is where she grew up and attended convent school. After graduation she worked in the local tobacco factory in a clerical position. Growing up in an area of escalating tensions, brought its own challenges. One year her uncle entered her in a pistol sharp shooting contest. Much to the chagrin of the men, she won first place. In December, 1944 the family was forced by the Nazis to leave their beloved homeland to work in factories in Bavaria. After the war and enduring much hardship, the family stayed in the general area and finally settled in one of many refugee camps (Passau). In 1948, the family was granted permission to immigrate to Venezuela.
This was a trying time for Elizabeth as being the eldest, she was expected to support her younger siblings. Eventually, Elizabeth met her husband Louis Ott, an Hungarian immigrant. They were married in 1953. The following year, their only son, Louis was born. In 1960, the family was able to immigrate to the USA and settled down in Cleveland, Ohio. To help support her family, she cleaned houses and convents, eventually working in the housekeeping department of Fairview Park General Hospital.
After a nasty divorce, her son persuaded her to move to Irving, Texas to be closer to him in 1975. Here she learned to drive and turned to her culinary experience to make a living. She worked at Highland Park Cafeteria, cooked for the Cistercians and Dominicans, Sky Chefs, and finally retiring from Irving Community Hospital when she turned 70 years old. Four years later she and her son moved to Fort Worth.
Elizabeth was a staunch supporter of everything Hungarian. She was tremendously proud of her heritage. “I cannot leave my son any riches, but I can leave him my language and customs”, she used to say. She was able to visit her beloved homeland only 3 times since 1944. She longed to be able to visit it one last time.
She enjoyed singing, gardening, cooking, baking, playing cards, and travel. As she grew older she became the matriarch and the keeper of the Orosz family history. Her cousins, nieces, and nephews, from Japan to Hungary and from Ohio to Maryland to Venezuela will miss her wisdom and love.
Survivors: Son, Louis P. Ott; brother, Laszlo Orosz; nieces; nephews; cousins; and dear friends.
Her cats, Szofi, Buksi, Kremes, and Boci will miss her lap.
Rest in Peace Boske / Tia.
