Elsy Perez Jones

November 23, 1956 — April 5, 2025

Elsy Pérez Fernández, lovingly known as Elsy Perez Jones, was born on November 23, 1956, in Cartagena, Colombia to proud parents Lazaro Pérez and Ofelia Fernández. She departed this world on April 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of intellect, passion, and love.

From a young age, Elsy showcased an insatiable curiosity that defined her childhood. In school, she was known for her spirited discussions, not shying away from expressing her thoughts or asking the questions others might hesitate to voice. She cherished her childhood days spent climbing trees and exploring the vibrant landscapes of San Cristóbal. It was here, visiting family and interacting with the local flora and fauna, that her love for nature truly blossomed. Alongside her older brothers and their friends, she created countless memories filled with laughter, play, and healthy competition, excelling in volleyball—a sport she would maintain a passion for throughout her life.

Elsy’s academic journey began alongside her oldest brother Alvaro, as they attended different primary schools, both graduating together later on. A diligent student, she was an active participant in her education, engaging deeply in discussions across all subjects. After graduating from high school at the Liceo Nacional Femenino Soledad Acosta de Samper, known as Universidad Feminina, she pursued higher education at Universidad de Cartagena, earning her Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and pharmacy. Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to her studies, she later received her PhD in molecular biology from The University of Texas at Dallas.

In a beautiful twist of fate, Elsy met Richard Jones while he was working with the Peace Corps in Colombia. Their shared interests and values fostered a deep connection that led to marriage in 1980. Shortly afterward, the couple moved to Texas, where they began to build a life together. Elsy's greatest joy came with the birth of their daughter, Liana, who is now 32 years old. As a devoted mother, Elsy poured her heart and soul into raising Liana, always seeking ways to inspire her daughter and make the world a better place for her family.

Elsy's professional endeavors flourished as she became a respected molecular biologist. In the 1990s, she played a significant role in the mapping of the mouse genome project at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Her groundbreaking research led to the discovery of the M10 region of genes in mice, and her findings contributed to several published scientific articles, further solidifying her place in academia.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Elsy was known for her beautiful spirit and indomitable passion. An intelligent and ambitious woman, she was relentless in her quests for knowledge, always willing to investigate, ask questions, and expand her understanding of the world around her. Her hobbies included volleyball, painting, and tending to her home research projects, particularly those related to growing and propagating plants.

A devoted Catholic, Elsy's faith provided a foundation for her life. She was a loving friend, aunt, sister, daughter, and wife, whose genuine care for others radiated in every relationship she fostered. Family trips to the countryside of San Cristóbal were cherished times for Elsy as she enjoyed connecting with relatives, sharing stories, and nourishing her passion for plants and animals.

Her caring nature and unwavering dedication to doing good made Elsy a beloved figure in the lives of all who knew her. She possessed a bit of stubbornness that reinforced her passionate pursuits, ensuring that her voice was heard and her ideals implemented.
