Esther Nickel, 106 of Dallas, passed away on March 2.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 18 at 1:00 pm at St. Michael Catholic Church, 3713 Harwood Road, Bedford, Texas. A reception follows at the home of Mary Ellen and David Hicks, 401 Woodlake Drive, Allen, Texas.
Esther was born on March 12, 1911 in Dewitt, Michigan the first born to Frank and Lena Pung. After her marriage to Roy Nickel in August of 1937, Esther was a homemaker, raising 5 children. As a homemaker, Esther creatively decorated every home she lived in. She was an avid knitter and skilled at sewing and gardening. After her children were grown, she served as a social worker for Bay County then worked 9 years as the Social Services Director at Mercy Hospital in Bay City, Michigan. Esther and Roy retired to Florida, and a few years later moved to Dallas, Texas.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 55 years, her brothers Lewis and Martin Pung and sisters Virginia Mitchell, Genevieve Goff, Gladys Stump and Helen Trieweiler.
She is survived by her sons John and James Nickel, daughters Barbara McCready, Martha Finn, and Mary Ellen Hicks, her sisters Lucille Bohr and Patricia Snyder, and sister-in-law Monica Pung, grandchildren Sean and Erin McCready, Roger, Thomas, and Timothy Nickel, Adrienne, Allison, and Anna Devereux, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren.
