Evelyn Montene Smith Buttram, age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior on
Thursday evening, September 6, 2018, in Mesa, Arizona. She passed from this world due to natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smith, her husband of 61 years, Hugh O. Buttram, her daughter,
Cathy Lynne Buttram, and siblings, Naomi Hayes, Ann Butler, and Marjorie Butler.
Evelyn was born in Smackover, Arkansas on October 6, 1929, but lived most of her adult life in Texas and Kansas. Besides being considerably more than a full-time mother and homemaker, she was a consummate hostess, always offering everyone a glass of iced tea, something to eat or at the very least, something sweet, being well known for a notorious “sweet tooth”! Up to and including the last few weeks of her life at the assisted living residence, you HAD to help yourself to the candy in the always full candy dish. She also worked as an executive secretary periodically throughout her life.
Evelyn would tell you that the most important job she handled in her life was raising her children to serve the Lord, always making sure they attended their local church without fail. She actively participated in all activities in and around that church community in leadership positions, especially those her children or grandchildren were involved with. In recent weeks, she was quick to offer to pray with those who were caring for her or visiting her, walking her faith into her last moments.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Rylee and husband, Tom, Lisa Satterfield and husband, Rev. Dallas R. Satterfield, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, her brother, Donald G. Smith, brother-in-law, Rev. William Hayes and multiple nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be on Friday, September 14, 2:15 p.m. DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, TX. Service's are under the direction of Lucas Funeral Home, 1321 Precinct Line Road in Hurst.
