Evelyn Louise Wisenbaker Savoie, age 94, passed away on Saturday, April 11, at a Dallas hospital after admission from an Irving nursing home. She was born on May 26, 1925, on a farm outside Mineola, Texas, to Daniel Irvin Wisenbaker, born in Lowndes County, Georgia, and Harriet Eliza Baker, born in Evergreen, Alabama. Evelyn was the last of the nine Wisenbaker children: Opal Cherry, Myrtle Bartlett; Norman, Irvin, Royce E., and Ralph Wisenbaker; Irma Cowart, and Dorothy Marie Boykin.
She was valedictorian of her class in Mineola High School graduating in 1942, and went on to the University of Texas on a scholarship. While there she met Robert J. Savoie, who was stationed with the Army at Camp Swift during WWII. They met at a Paul Jones dance, and were married on November 15, 1943.
The Savoies moved to Bedford in 1957, and both worked at the Post Office from which Evelyn retired in 1987. After her husband’s death, she traveled widely, often accompanied by her daughter, visiting Mexico, Guatemala, Canada, Europe and many parts of the United States.
Evelyn had a deep belief in God and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in North Richland Hills. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of the Georgia Salzburger Society. Always interested in the political process, she kept abreast of current events and had voted by mail as of late. She was captivated by history, in particular of family history, and found DNA connections of interest. She was a pet lover and had many faithful dogs throughout her lifetime.
Her husband Robert predeceased her as did a baby daughter, Louise Mary. Surviving Evelyn are sons Paul F. Savoie, (Alicia) of Lewisville and Charles R. Savoie of Bedford; daughter Alice Elaine Conklin (Jay) of Irving; and grandson Jeff Andrew Savoie of Lewisville. She leaves numerous nieces, including Gwen Cowart Dixie of Dallas, Judy Cowart Hersey of Mumford, England, Ellen Wisenbaker Cornell of Rockwall, Billie Jean Cherry of Tyler, Paula Whisenant and Libby Wallace of Dallas, Jackie Besette and Nancy Higgenbotham of New Hampshire, as well and one nephew, Ronald Savoie of New Jersey. Evelyn loved people and had many friends who survive her as well as many who have gone before her. Evelyn was kind soul who was loved by all, will be greatly missed and always remembered. Dear sweet mother, Rest In Peace.
