It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our dearly beloved Fatma Hegić, who passed away on October 29th, 2023 at 62 years old. She heroically fought a 33 year battle with scleroderma, pulmonary and vascular diseases.
Fatma was born on March 31st, 1961 to Sulejman and Redžifa Hegić in Elezoviće, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She was the fifth of nine children in a farming family. She completed a high school education and wanted to be a nurse but could not afford further education. She started working at 18 at a local factory and continued until the start of the Bosnian civil war. Once she moved to the United States in 1997, she worked as a nanny for many, many families. Children were truly the greatest joy in her life.
Fatma absolutely adored children and they equally adored her. She enjoyed cooking, puzzles, flowers, gardening, and most of all spending time with friends and family. She had an unparalleled will to live and adapt to all the adversities she faced in life, her courage, brevity, strength, and preserverance have been an inspiration to so many.
Fatma is preceded in death by her father, Sulejman, mother Redžifa, sister Fatima, brother Rasim, grandson Jackson, and nieces Azra and Mirnesa. She is survived by her daughter Helena and son-in-law Layne, grandchildren David and Elliott, sisters Šefika, Ajka, Zejna, Senija, and Mejra, brother Hajrudin, and thirteen nieces and nephews.
Fatma’s family will celebrate her life with an outdoor visitation at Rolling Oaks Cemetery Pavilion on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, 12:00-2:00 p.m., followed by the burial.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Fatma’s name to the Limbs For Life Foundation, a global nonprofit organization providing prosthetic care for individuals who cannot otherwise afford it and raising awareness of the challenges facing amputees. Fatma received a leg prosthesis from Limbs of Life in 2016 allowing her to continue driving and living independently for the last seven years.
