Grover L. West

January 3, 1932 — August 14, 2022

Chief Master Sergeant Grover L. West, USAF Retired (1978) of Hurst, TX, passed away peacefully at home on August 14, 2022. He will be remembered as a proud veteran, dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
He was born on January 3, 1932 in Draketown, Georgia. He spent his early life in the Columbus area where he spent much of his time with his grandparents, Mr. Grover and Lottie Fuller. He worked as a carpenter’s helper with his stepfather Dave Skinner. As a young man he was also very close to his aunts Bessie Mae McGuirt and Christine Rabun. Grover entered the Air Force in 1950. While stationed in Alabama he met and married Josephine Brannon in 1954 and were married until her death in 1980.
He enlisted in the USAF in 1950 and proudly served his country in North Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and numerous states during his career. He was the recipient of many decorations including the Bronze Star for service during the Vietnam War.
After retiring from USAF, he had a second career as a director in the Daughters of Charity health care system. He was a Mason and Shriner with a kind and giving heart for many charities. He loved the outdoors and helping others so he along with his loving wife, Marcene, did volunteer work at Yellowstone National Park for several summers. He spent his retirement years traveling, watching his grandkids play sports, and living on the lake in Granbury where he enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing and most importantly spending quality time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Burma Lee Skinner, wife, Josephine West, sister, Barbara Strickland, brother, Lamar Skinner; son-in-law, Charlie Odiorne, and stepdaughter, Angela Booker.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Marcene West of Hurst; children, Jim West and wife, Debbie of Colleyville, Tim West and wife, Krissty of St. Jo; Delores Odiorne of Round Rock; Stepchildren, Jimmy Day and wife, Bobbie of Howard, Kansas, and Racene Day and husband, Tad Woofter of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Brett West and wife, Christine, Lacey West, Stephanie West, Wyatt West, Charles Odiorne and wife Jennifer, Tony Odiorne and wife Leslie; Step-grandchildren, Stormy Day, Darren Hamby, James Hamby, Brianna Proctor, Kate Booker, Cole Woofter, Rachel Woofter, and Garrett Woofter; great-grandchildren, Silas, Josephine, Lila, Abe, Charlie, Roxie, Ryan and Elizabeth; Grover is also survived by his siblings, Raylene Reese and husband, Jimmy, Carolyn Wages, Sherold Skinner and wife, Brenda, Genevieve Slate, and Frankie Skinner; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 19, 2022 at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. at Friendship Baptist Church located at 1248 W. Hurst Blvd, Hurst, Texas 76053 followed by interment with Full Air Force Honors at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made the Hood County Senior Center.
