Harvey Edsel Shelton

May 1, 1931 — June 30, 2020

Harvey Edsel Shelton, 89, of Burleson, passed away Tuesday, June 30,2020. He suffered with a short, but very painful illness in his last days, but endured with a kind, sweet spirit.

Harvey Shelton was the only child of Oval and Lorene Shelton. He was born May 1, 1931, near Pittsburg, Missouri. He graduated from high school at the age of 16. He loved farm work and helped his parents on a dairy farm for two years after graduating.

Harvey was inducted into the United States Army in 1951, one year after his marriage to Pauline. Pauline joined him in California after his basic training. Harvey was sent to The Presidio in San Francisco for special schooling, then to Japan in the 64th Engineer Battalion.
Their son, Doug, was born in 1954 and their daughter, Pam, was born in 1957. Pauline and the children always felt his love and security.
Harvey worked for Sears for 37 years. He was transferred to Dallas in 1978 and took retirement on 26 acres in East Texas. He enjoyed tractors, farm animals, and gardening. He continued to garden up until he could no longer walk and enjoyed sharing the fruits from his labor.
Harvey and Pauline became members of the Church of Christ in 1955. He was a deacon over Benevolence and Education departments in Raytown, Missouri. Harvey was a deacon over bus ministry in Arlington, Texas. At Holly Lake, he was a deacon over building and grounds before becoming an elder over education in 2002. He retired from this in 2013, after helping build the new auditorium at Holly Lake Church. Harvey enjoyed helping at Camp Deer Run for many years.

From the time he walked into the Burleson Church of Christ in 2016, on his 86th birthday, Harvey felt great spirituality, love, and comfort. In the last few days, when he could still talk, he wanted Mom to thank the leadership and fellow Christians here in Burleson for welcoming them.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Pauline; son, Doug Shelton and wife, Nancy; daughter, Pam Barkley and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Brian Shelton and wife, Carol, Chris Shelton and wife, Meredith, Valerie Chambers and husband, Josh, Daniel Barkley and wife, Michelle, Nathan Barkley and wife, Lindsey, Steven Shelton and fiancé, Shirine, and John Barkley and wife, Tara; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
