Helga Dorothea Fischer, born Rabe, age 83, lost her battle with cancer on August 29, 2019 in Denton, Texas. She is survived by her husband Nikolaus ( Klaus ) H. Fischer, her daughter Gabriele Ohmstede Landry, her son Axel Ohmstede and her four beloved grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Kimberly and Lindsey.
Helga was born on August 17, 1936 in the Hanseatic City of Bremen, Germany, where she was raised by a loving family. There she experienced as a little girl the horrors of frequent bombardments during World War ll. Helga and her husband Klaus met first more than 75 years ago, at age 7, when her family was evacuated from her home town during turbulences of the war, and came to Klaus’ hometown in Selesia, now part of Poland.
On September 2, 1971, Helga and her Children, Gabriele and Axel, from her first marriage arrived in the United States. Helga and Klaus, both at age 35, got married on December 18, 1971 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During the first years, she was a loving homemaker and outstanding gardener. After the children graduated from high school, she joined her husband’s research group in the Department of Chemistry at Louisiana State University- Baton Rouge. She became a friend and “caring group mother and mentor” to nearly 30 Ph.D. and MS students and visiting scientists from the US and many foreign countries. Her generous caring for family, friends and any person who was in need of help, continued throughout her life and became he trademark. After retirement in 2003 in Denton, Texas, she joined the Robson Ranch “Yarn Divas” a knitting group. She created caps for newborns at one of the local hospitals as well as caps for cancer patients.
