Howard Harmon Carvajal, 84, of Burleson, TX, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday February 3, at Joshua Baptist Church, 3231 S.W. Wilshire Blvd. Joshua, TX. Rev. Gene Wolfenbarger will officiate.
Howard was born in El Paso, TX. to Howard Harmon and Katherine Margaret Goodloe Carvajal, Sr. Howard graduated from Austin High School in El Paso. He continued his education in Counseling & Guidance Institute at Texas Tech, Lubbock, and the University of Texas in Austin. He furthered his education at Texas Western College (UTEP), El Paso, TX. Howard was a teacher, coach, and counselor at Austin High School, El Paso. Howard’s education led him to becoming a Professor, Division of Psychology and Special Education, at Emporia State University, Emporia Kansas. He served on the faculty senate for 16 years, and as president of the faculty, 1991-92. He conducted numerous workshops related to psychological testing, evaluated students for districts which did not have school psychologists as well as students identified as learning disabled. He was well known to academicians across the country through his psychological research which produced scores of articles and presentations. His research has been cited in numerous psychological testing textbooks. His incredible activities as a scholar could not be gauged by his humility. To honor him and his many contributions, the Division of Psychology and Special Education established the Howard Carvajal Undergraduate Psychology Scholarship. Howard was also honored by Phi Alpha Theta (National Honor Society in History), Psi Chi (National Honor Society in Psychology), and Recipient of College of Education, Outstanding Teaching Award, Recipient of College of Education Outstanding Scholarly Activity Award, and Induction into National Teachers Hall of Fame “for accomplishments as life-changing educator”.
Howard served as President of the Emporia, KS Baseball Club in 1983-84 and worked in the American Legion Baseball Program 1981-84. He was instrumental in the imple mentation and sanction of the baseball program at Emporia High School.
Life-long Southern Baptist, a certified Southern Baptist Seminary Extension Teacher, loved and served Jesus. He taught Sunday School Classes, served as music director, and interim pastor for many churches in Kansas. Howard is currently a member of Joshua Baptist Church.
Survivors include; wife Shirley Carvajal; Daughter, Carolyn (Gary) Miller; sons, Paul (Alana) Carvajal, Steve (Heather) Carvajal; grandchildren, Perry (Candace) Partlow, Brooklyn, Paige, Madison, Easton, Chase, & Kooper Carvajal, Ben & Dan Miller, Christine Filippelli; great-grandchildren, Ariana & Julian Partlow, Audrey & Charles Miller, Lucy Filippelli, Harvi Miller; brother, Bruce (Kathy Sawyer) Carvajal; nieces and nephew, Kristine (Justin) Moore and their children Lindsay & Mason, Sanford(Jen) Carvajal and their son Connor.
