Ira Marcelle Richards (Sonny)
Ira Richards of Keller Texas gained his heavenly wings Saturday, January 25, 2020 in Plano Texas. He will always be remembered as a loving father, friend, teammate and colleague to all who knew him. Ira was born on December 29, 1971 in De Queen, Arkansas to Eugene Johnson and Ina Richard.
An athlete for the ages, Ira was an All-State pick and Defensive Player of the Year at Broken Bow High School where he amassed 129 tackles, including 73 unassisted in his senior year alone. College was no different as he was named First-team All-Lone Star Conference three times in his collegiate career. As a professional athlete with the San Jose SaberCats, Ira achieved many bests throughout his arena football career, such as the most tackles in a single game and most sacks in a season. Through his entire athletic career, Sonny set records that have yet to be broken.
In his professional career outside of athletics, Ira was a lauded construction site manager for over 20 years. He finished his career as an esteemed colleague of Ashton Woods Homebuilders, where he was known and loved by many. Devoted father, he coached all his children onto greatness in their various sporting ventures. He has left a lasting impact of work ethic and drive to succeed. All of which the Richards kids and all who encountered the coach he was will cherish.
Ira is preceded in passing by his mother and father. He is survived by his Daughters Kaitlin Richards of Mansfield Texas, and Kyra Richards of Keller Texas, Son Austen Richards of Keller Texas, Niece Gabriella Turpin of Bedford Texas, (but to Ira she was a daughter) Sisters Glenda Scott, Valerie Laney, and Artrabella Scott all of Keller Texas, Rosalind Johnson and Shameika Johnson of Dallas Texas, and a wealth of beloved cousins and friends
