Irene Catherine Flynn, 98, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2018, just four days short of her 99th birthday. She was born in Gladwin, Michigan on February 13, 1919 to William and Louvina Flynn. She was the sixth (6th) of 13 children in a large Irish Catholic family. The two (2) most important things in Irene’s life were family and religion.
She was married to former Mayor of Flint, Michigan, George G. Wills. Irene and George eloped, and were married in Bowling Green, Ohio in March 26, 1949. They were married 34 years. She brought to their marriage the charm, grace, and elegance of a lady who was just as comfortable with an elegant dinner with her good china or a simple picnic on paper plates. Irene and George loved to spend many memorable moments in public service, going dancing, and with family gatherings (Christmas parties, cookouts, weddings, reunions, and enjoying their lake property in Michigan).
She was a member of Sigma Lamda Sigma Sorority, and the USO during WWll where she entertained the troops. She attended Baker Business Institute and was employed with General Motors as an accountant until she retired in 1974. Often, she would say that she was retired longer than she worked (with a BIG SMILE on her face). After she retired she eventually moved to Texas and enjoyed travel; reading: politics; going to the lake property in Michigan; needlepoint; playing cards (she was a Euchre “card shark”). She loved big band swing, jazz, blues, and country music. She also loved sports and was an avid follower of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team, and going to the rodeo. She really loved her Irish heritage, enjoying Irish music, festivals, and St. Patty’s Day gatherings. Irene, is survived by her son Paul Wills, and daughter in law Yvonne Wills of Keller, Texas. Sisters Helen Keller and Barbara Brophy of Flint, Michigan, Cherrill Flynn of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Joan Flynn of Southlake, Texas, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
