Izetta Rose Greene

December 18, 1947 — January 28, 2023

Izetta Rose Yancy-Greene went home to be with our Lord and Savior on January 28, 2023, at the age of 75.

Izetta loved family, food, and Jesus. She grew up in the Catholic Church, beginning with her time at the Sacred Heart Convent in Cape Palmas, Liberia. She graduated from Lady of Fatimah High School in 1965 and earned her bachelor’s degree from University of Liberia in 1969. After graduation, Izetta accepted a position with Citibank in Monrovia, Liberia, where she met her late husband, Charles Greene. As she would tell the story, it wasn’t love at first sight. However, his interest peaked after he noticed she was reading an economics book for work. He was instantly charmed by Izetta’s wit and intellectual curiosity. They started dating and were married on December 21, 1969.

Izetta graduated from the University of Liberia’s Law School in 1973 and accepted a position with Liberia’s Department of Immigration. She eventually rose to Deputy Chief and remained with Immigration until the Coup in 1980. After fleeing to the US, in 1980, the family settled in Needham, Massachusetts, where Izetta attended classes at Harvard Law School, and Charles worked for the Bank of Boston. In the US, she was at her best and most professionally fulfilled in a handful of paralegal positions in the US, where she could satisfy her intellectual curiosity. She retired from the Tax Circuit Court of Morristown, New Jersey in 2010. Post retirement, Izetta poured her passion and energy into learning about homeopathic remedies for various ailments. She would often purchase and ship supplements to friends and family without seeking any reimbursement. But that’s who she was. She would give you her last because doing the right thing was the best remedy to any of life’s challenges.

Izetta was a force of nature with boundless energy. Outside of her intellectual pursuits, she loved to cook and entertain friends and family. She was quick to offer a smile or joke to put others at ease. She was probably best known for her Cod Fish Gravy and her “Country Jollof Rice,” a recipe she invented (according to her) during her time in Texas during the 90’s. But her hands down favorite food was Palm Butter and Rice, and if the meal was just right, she would sing a little ditty called “Palm Butter and Rice So Sweet.” Izetta was an active member of the Yancy Family association, where she regularly supported various family causes and events, including the Annual Reunion.

If you spent any time with Izetta, you’d soon know that she was a woman of faith. She loved to serve the Lord, and His praises were always upon her lips. Even in the face of her battle with dementia, Izetta would continue to quote 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given ‘me’ a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Her faith was deep and unshakable. Despite all of life’s challenges, you could count on Izetta for powerful and moving prayer. Izetta leaves behind three adult children, Michael, Matthew, and Charlly, and numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. However, she will be met by her late husband, Charles Greene, and her parents, Isaac Yancy and Cecilia Mayson-Lloyd.
