Jack M. Cobb,78, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015.
Graveside services were held Thursday, December 24, at North Raleigh Cemetery in Raleigh, Mississippi.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Mr. Cobb will be held 10am on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Lucas Funeral Chapel in Hurst. Memorials in honor of Mr. Cobb may be sent to a charity of one's choice or TCC Foundation, 1500 Houston St., Fort Worth, TX 76102.
Mr. Cobb was a devoted husband, an accomplished musician, a dedicated professor of music and an avid fan of Ole Miss football and the Dallas Cowboys.
A longtime resident of Hurst, he was born on September 22, 1937 in Batesville, Mississippi. Mr. Cobb graduated from Batesville High School where as a member of the high school marching band, he began his life long journey with the love of music. He went on to join the "Pride of the South" marching band and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1959 with a degree in music. He earned his Masters Degree at New Mexico Highlands and completed extensive work towards his doctorate at the University of North Texas.
During his distinguished 40 year career as a lead trombonist in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Mr. Cobb toured with numerous big band orchestras throughout the country and abroad. He spent many years sharing his love of music performing and directing at a variety of venues in the Dallas-Fort Worth area including Casa Manana, Six Flags Over Texas and Dallas Summer Musical. Over the span of his career, he enjoyed performing with many major stars of film, theatre and television. He also had the distinction of playing lead trombone on Percy Sledge's number one hit, "When a Man Loves a Woman"
Mr. Cobb began teaching in Tupelo, Mississippi, before moving on to Huntsville, Alabama. His teaching career culminated with a 35 year position teaching music at Tarrant County College, North East Campus in Hurst. Mr. Cobb was known by his students as a "wonderful teacher and a talented musician" who used his "vast experience and sense of humor" to motivate his students. The skills he shared with his students will live on for many years and be a testament to his legacy.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Cobb greatly enjoyed conducting the Fort Worth Rodeo Band from 1987 until his retirement in 2010.
Mr. Cobb was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Cobb and Annie M. Cobb and his brother, Bob Cobb.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Shelby Bounds Cobb and her brother, Dr. Sam (Lisa) Bounds; niece Sandra Cobb; nephew, Jim Cobb; great-niece, Corrina Cobb Hayes and a host of fellow musicians and former students with whom he shared the joy of music.
