Jacob Boyd Rivers III, known to everyone as Tripp, passed away on August 12th, 2023, at the age of 64, in Chicago, IL due to a sudden cardiovascular event. Tripp had just celebrated his son’s wedding and was surrounded by family, friends, laughs and love. Right before his time of passing he had proclaimed to everyone around him it was the best night of his life.
Tripp was passionate about his family, his dog Jack, his astounding work in oil and gas, and OU football. Tripp was born on 7/22/59 in Oklahoma City to Jacob Boyd Jr. and Elaine Judith Rivers. He graduated from Heritage Hall at 16 years old in 1976, started at UCO to save his parents money, then went to OSU before landing at his very favorite school, the University of Oklahoma. During his time at OU in 1983, he married Nancy McKillen Rivers. They moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where they started their family and welcomed their daughter Lauren Alyssa Rivers to the world, followed by their son Jacob Boyd Rivers IV.
Tripp was an incredibly passionate and talented Geologist; he committed his talent and life’s work to the oil and gas industry. He and his business partner Frank Starr started Crimson Energy in 1998 and worked together since 1995, his role as a partner was identifying, drilling, developing and managing the company’s assets across several basins in Texas. As partners Tripp and Frank built and sold four different entities over the 25 years they were in business together. At one point they made the list of Top 100 Most Active Independent Drillers in the US. Frank and Tripp have been friends, business partners and oil enthusiasts for over 28 years.
In 1990, Tripp became a father to Lauren. He was so proud of her academic and musical endeavors throughout her childhood. Lauren has great memories of their father/daughter trip to The Woodlands, college visits and Christmas trip to Cancun. Tripp was so proud to walk Lauren down the aisle to marry Nathan Rogers in 2014. Tripp was proud to call Nate his son and loved sharing the drama of OU/Baylor football games with him. In 2021, Tripp got a new name of “Pops” to his first grandchild, Corazon Elaine Rogers. Tripp adored spending as much time with “Baby Cora” as he could.
In 1993, Tripp welcomed his son, Jacob Boyd Rivers IV. Jacob and Tripp enjoyed playing football in the living room and the front yard and watching OU play. He loved watching Jacob’s many football and baseball games throughout his childhood and adolescence. In 2000, Jacob and Tripp attended their first of many OU bowl games over the next 2 decades, including the 4 National Championship games. Jacob and Tripp met up across the country to watch OU play at every chance they could get. They were each other’s best friend.
As Tripp neared retirement, he increased his travel by enjoying Costa Rica and Colorado. He moved to a new neighborhood in Haslet, TX where he was enjoying a bit more leisure with his neighbors. Tripp loved German Shepherds and had three throughout his life - Bowser, Sam and his current dog, Jack. Tripp rarely left a steakhouse without a “doggy bag.”
Tripp loved his sister Judy and was always ready to walk by her side. They enjoyed laughing together and celebrating OU wins. Tripp was so proud when his younger brother Tim was born, who was later the best man in Tripp’s wedding. Tripp enjoyed spending time with his siblings often.
In the final few days of his life, Tripp was in Chicago for his son Jacob and daughter-in-law Rachel’s wedding. He came into Chicago early that week and spent his last days laughing, sharing stories, making plans for future trips and having a blast with his family and new family. He gave a heartfelt, loving speech at Jacob and Rachel’s rehearsal dinner where he detailed his deep love for his son and his excitement for Rachel to join his family, stating how proud he was to call her his daughter-in-law.
On Tripp’s last night, he got to walk his daughter Lauren down the aisle for the second time, watch her officiate Jacob and Rachel’s wedding, and he got to see his adored granddaughter walk down the aisle as flower girl. Also that night, Tripp got to listen to Jacob state in a toast how proud he was to be his son.
