James Edward Gibson

James Edward Gibson, First Sergeant, U.S. Army (Retired), passed away on May 31, 2016.
Funeral: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst. Interment will follow at Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: The family will receive from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
James was born on July 20, 1936, in McGregor, Texas to Edward and Annie Lee Gibson. Following graduation from high school in McGregor, James was drafted into the United States Army on July 22, 1958. After basic training, he was assigned to Battery A 1st Battalion 77th Field Artillery 4th Infantry Division in Ft. Lewis, Washington. James spent the next twenty-one years serving his country, including assignments to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, mostly with the special forces. In June 1970, he was assigned to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he taught cadets military history, leadership, and combat tactics and techniques. In 1972 he was promoted to First Sergeant (E8) after only fourteen years of service. James was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroism, Air Medal 1st and 2nd Award, Vietnam Civil Action Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Unit Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Medal, Valorous Unit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous letters of appreciation. James was a patriotic hero who took pride in his service of our nation.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors: Wife, Ly Thi Watson; daughters, Tammy Belynda Emmons and husband Ted and Jamie De'Ann Brothers and husband Tom; sister Gennie Ann Lassetter and husband Kenneth; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.
