Grapevine

James “Jim” Clyde Bennett, 90, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of Grapevine, Texas, passed away on April 5, 2025. Born on February 10, 1935, in Loraine, Texas, to Clyde and Nellie (Stuart) Bennett, “Jimmy” moved with his family to Waco, Texas, the following year, where he grew up. At the age of 13, he gave his heart to Jesus and was baptized.

In 1952, Jim graduated from Waco High School and began his higher education at Rice University, where he was active in NROTC for three years. He transferred to the University of Texas but paused his studies in 1957 to serve in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Lieutenant. Returning to UT in 1959, he completed his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1960. His early career with General Electric took him across the country, from California to New York, Virginia to Florida. In 1964, Jim returned to Waco where he completed an MBA at Baylor University. There, at a local church, he met the love of his life, Judith “Judy” Elaine Bollinger. They married April 17th 1965, beginning a partnership that would span nearly 60 years.

Together, Jim and Judy built a rich life while raising two daughters, Mandy and Polly. GE would require multiple moves: Ohio; Ft. Worth, Texas; Massachusetts; Bedford, Texas; Kansas; and finally, Colleyville, Texas. With each relocation, the family quickly found a church home, forged friendships, and embraced their new community. During his 35-year career with General Electric, Jim tackled high-stakes projects requiring top- level security clearance and international travel. He played a key role in developing the Stealth Bomber, contributed to special Pentagon initiatives, and was part of the team that deployed the first squadron of F-4s to sea. His photographic memory, sharp intellect, and charismatic leadership left a lasting mark on colleagues and projects alike.

Jim’s passions were as diverse as his life. A skilled aviator, he earned seven aeronautical ratings, including flight instructor, and cherished his time in the skies. In addition, he was a Master Mason for over 50 years, a member of JH Gurley Lodge No. 337 in Waco, Texas. His faith in the Lord led him to serve as head deacon at Church at the Cross, where he helped secure the land for the church’s current home. A voracious reader, Jim, could devour a novel in a day, and with Judy, he embarked on mission trips and motorhome adventures. Family vacations and cruises with his children and grandchildren were among his most treasured moments.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Bollinger Bennett; daughters, Madeline “Mandy” Gann (Christian) and Polly Cordova (Jorge); granddaughters, Mahaley and Lillian Gann; step-grandchildren, Kevin and Lauren Cordova; as well as Bennett cousins; a niece; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Nellie Bennett, and his older brother, John D. Wilson Bennett.

In his final years, Jim faced significant medical challenges with inspiring determination. Defying expectations, he learned to walk on two prosthetic legs, showcasing the same resilience and optimism that defined him. Now at peace with the Lord, Jim leaves a legacy of strength, kindness, and wisdom. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, leader, and friend, he touched countless lives and will be deeply missed, yet his life well lived brings us joy.

A memorial service celebrating Jim’s life will be held on April 16, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Church at the Cross in Grapevine, Texas. All are welcome to join in honoring his memory.
