James Riley Michaels – November 9, 1930 – April 6, 2024
James Riley Michaels – went to be forever with his lord and savior peacefully in his sleep at his home in Bedford, TX on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the age of 93. He finally made his final flight to “the big airport in the sky.”
Jim was born to Roy and Beuna Michaels in Smithville, TX on November 9, 1930. He was raised in Itaska and Grandview Texas. After graduating high school, he left against his parents’ wishes to further his education. While at college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and became a Sabre Jet pilot. He was a Korean War Veteran and served his country with pride. After his active duty, he joined the reserves and went to work for American Airlines. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the USAF Reserve and a Captain at American Airlines in 1990. The only thing he loved more than flying airplanes, was his family. His best friends called him “Jimbo” and they would gather regularly to play poker. Almost every evening of his adult life, you would find him in his chair watching the news and enjoying a dry martini with a twist.
Jim’s main goal in life was to be a good father. He accomplished this to the fullest. His love was unconditional, and his hugs could cure all. He taught his children the importance of education, moral standards, hard work and confidence. He made his children the center of his life and gave everything a father could give. There was never any doubt that his family meant more to him than anything else in the world. Dad, there will not be a day that goes by that you are not missed.
Jim was predeceased by his father and mother, his brothers Roy (Sonny) and Bobby, and his sister Marilyn. He is survived by his wife of 10 1/2 years, Peggy; his son Richard Michaels and wife Tanna; his daughter Terri Hooper; his daughter Sharon Edwards and husband Derry; his grandchildren Laura, Stacy, Trey, Chelsea, and Collin; and nine great grandchildren.
A visitation for friends and family will be held Monday, April 15th at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst, TX after which he will be laid to rest aside his brothers in arms at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery with full military honors.
“I’ve trod the high un-trespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand, and touched the face of God.” – John Gilespie Magee, Jr; “High Flight”
