Janice T. Crabtree

November 27, 1925 — August 13, 2018

Janice Thompson Crabtree Bunnell, age 92, of Grapevine, Texas and West Yellowstone, Montana, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018.

She was born on November 27, 1925 in Dallas, Texas to Knollis and Opal Thompson. She attended Hockaday School, graduating in 1941. In 1945 she married William (Bill) Crabtree and they resided on a farm in Grapevine, now which is in the DFW Airport. In 1955, she designed and built a new home in the ‘city’ of Grapevine. She and Bill and Cecilia and Joe Box were the first residents in the Box Addition. Janice and Bill raised two sons, Bill and Jim, in this home and she lived there until the accidental death of Bill Sr in a boating accident in 1973. She was a charter member of St. Laurence Episcopal Church in Southlake. Here she met her 2nd husband, Grant Bunnell, whom she married in 1977. They led a very active life in Grapevine and also in West Yellowstone, MT where they spent all their summers. Grant passed away in 1990, after 13 happily married years. Later in life, Janice had a very special relationship with Irving Greene of Grapevine, until the time of Irv’s death in June 2014.

Janice loved to read, play bridge, travel and spend time with her two granddaughters, Jennifer Crabtree and Guinevere Crabtree. She doted on these two girls and urged them to spend their summers in Montana with her. Her great granddaughter, Chasity Max Crabtree also spent many summers with her in Montana. Her travels included trips to Europe on the QE II, Vienna, Canada, The Caribbean, Australia & New Zealand, but her real love was Montana.

Janice was featured in an early 1960s issue of The Ladies Home Journal magazine, with an article on “How to Complete Your Housework by 8:30 am”. She was also honored to have her condolence letter to Jacqueline Kennedy on the assassination of JFK featured in the 2007 book, “Letters to Jackie”. She was invited to attend and participate in the Dallas premiere of a documentary based on the book, which aired on the 50th anniversary of the assassination in 2013.

She is survived by her son Bill Crabtree and wife Deborah of Muenster, Texas; granddaughters Jennifer Crabtree of Whitney, Texas and Guinevere Crabtree of Estes Park, Colorado; great-granddaughters Chasity (Max) and Melissa, great-grandson Alexander and great-great granddaughter Leighlonnie.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill and husband Grant, son Jim Thompson Crabtree and great-great granddaughter Isabelle.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 11:00am at Lucas Funeral Home, Grapevine. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Bill, at Grove Hill Cemetery, Dallas.
