Janice Gallenbach Emery

October 9, 1966 — June 8, 2015

Though our hearts are aching, we are celebrating the love and many cherished memories we’ve shared with our beloved Janice Gallenbach Emery. On June 8, 2015 Janice quietly passed away at home after a three-year battle with cancer.

Janice has forever altered our lives. We learned so much from her. We learned, from watching her and Matt together, how to treat someone that you love unconditionally. We saw how they teased and laughed and supported one another. We saw how they embraced life and shared both the highs, and the lows, with each other. We saw how she devoted herself to her children. The pure delight she took in being with them. We saw how she taught them what really matters, empathy and compassion and selflessness. She loved.

We learned about compassion. Janice cared deeply for people and for causes. In the midst of her own struggles she continued to find the time to serve others. She helped at school and volunteered at local charities. She knew that she was no higher than anybody else, or lower than anybody else. And she was always there as a friend, quick to ask you what was bothering you or to offer a shoulder to cry on. She cared.

We learned about strength. Janice had a strong sense of justice, and she wasn’t shy about sharing it. If she read or saw something that she felt was unfair, she would speak for what she believed to be right. Whether it be for something as serious as fellow cancer patients, poverty or politics; or something as commonplace as the latest tabloid gossip or just a pair of boots she felt should have lasted longer than ten years. She would voice her opinion. And, of course, she fought her disease for three long years while continuing to care for family, friends and community. She was strong.

We learned how a good laugh can lighten your whole spirit. She liked to joke about being the perfect southern lady. She would throw around her “y’all’s” and “fixin to’s” and a sweet, but overly sappy, “bless your heart”. She found it hilarious, and when her laughter filled the room, it was. She laughed.

Right now we’ll grieve. We’ll weep because we love her and we will mourn the loss of someone that represented dignity and integrity. But, in the future, when you remember Janice, please remember the love, the compassion, the strength and the laughter. Remember what you learned from her. And, bless your hearts.

Janice leaves behind her husband Matt, and three beautiful children, Jack (16), Sarah (15) and Katie (12). Also surviving her is her brother Craig Gallenbach, married to Cheryl Vrooman; her brother Tom Gallenbach, married to Jane; her sister Amy Schreiber, married to Dan; nieces and nephews Jimmy, Julie, Joey, Emily and Jake and her mother, Rosemary Gallenbach. She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Gallenbach.

A memorial service will take place on Thursday June 11, at 2:00, at Lucas Funeral Home: 700 West Wall St, Grapevine, TX. Following the memorial service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Grapevine Convention Center: 1209 South Main St, Grapevine.
