Janice Carol Hays Varnell

d. January 2, 2024

In loving memory of Janice Carol Hays Varnell, whose life was a symphony of love, faith, and service. Janice illuminated the lives of countless souls through her unwavering devotion to her family, her faith in Jesus, and her boundless compassion for others. Her marriage to John Varnell, who preceded her in death, was a testament to enduring love. She took great care nurturing two cherished children, John and Leane, who were the heartbeats of her world.

Janice's love for Jesus was evident in every aspect of her life, whether teaching, playing the organ and piano, directing choirs, or leading others in spiritual growth. She was a beacon of wisdom, offering guidance as a teacher of teachers, a remarkable prayer warrior, and a source of grace and mercy that touched innumerable lives. Her home was an oasis of warmth and acceptance, where many found solace and support.

For over 50 years, Janice graced the field of education with her presence. She began as a music teacher at St Mary’s Episcopal in Big Spring, Texas, and journeyed through Duncanville ISD, leaving an indelible mark by writing curriculum and retiring as a principal at Central Elementary. Her dedication continued at Faith Family Academy, where she found a family of kindred spirits, who honored her legacy and passion for education with a scholarship. Even though she retired (again) she continued serving on the Faith Family Education Foundation Board.

Even in retirement, Janice's spirit of service never waned. She remained a Bible teacher, a small group leader, and a sage counsel whose wisdom was sought by many. Her adventurous spirit took her to Durango, Colorado, Ecuador, Key West, and Vermont where she continued to embrace life's beauty and wonders.

Janice was more than a beloved mother, sister, aunt, wife, grandmother, and friend. She was a guiding light, a reservoir of love, and an embodiment of compassion. Her legacy of unwavering love, tireless service, and unyielding faith will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched. Janice's memory will continue to inspire, uplift, and remind us of the extraordinary impact one life can have on so many others.
