Jeanne Marie Hughes, 97, of Bedford, Texas passed away at home under the loving care of her family and Ardent Hospice on June 17, 2023. Jeanne was born in Pittston, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas Tigue and Catherine Reddington Tigue. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Eileen Tigue.
She graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, With the class of 1942. Following graduation she lived for a time in Coatesville, PA where she worked at the V.A. Hospital. She later married Gerald (Jerry) Michael Hughes, son of James and Helen Hughes of Plains, PA. Several years later, Jeanne and Jerry relocated to Harrison, NJ and later to Kearny, NJ where she worked at RCA.
She and her husband had two children, Joseph Hughes now residing in Ormond FL and Ann Hughes, presently residing in Bedford, TX.
Jeanne was a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her children until the death of her husband in 1962. She then became employed by the IRS until her retirement in 1985. During those years, she purchased a house and continued to raise her two children as a single mother.
She was a parishioner at St Cecilla Church in Kearny, NJ where she served for a year as the president of the Rosary Society and was later a parishioner at St Michaels Church in Bedford, TX where she was a member of the “Available Angels” volunteer group as well as the craft group as she was very skilled and took delight in many forms of arts and crafts.
Jeanne also enjoyed travel and made several trips throughout her life to Ireland, England, Canada, Nova Scotia, Cape Cod, New Orleans, California, New Mexico and Florida.
Jeanne Had five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandsons Jason Hughes, Joseph Hughes and her granddaughter Stephanie Hughes. Her surviving grandchildren are Christopher Hughes (and his wife Rebecca,) and Rhiannon Hughes, all residing in Florida. She also had three great-grandchildren: Ayanna Hughes, Jakari Hughes and Persia Hughes.
Jeanne deeply loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always took an interest and cherished her trips to spend time with them and her son and his with Debbie, in Florida.
Jeanne lived her life with kindness and compassion. She was open, accepting and welcoming to all people and this sense of inclusivity resulted in a full, expansive and enriched life. She always saw the good in people. Rather than judging people she gave the benefit of the doubt and offered them the gift of Grace.
She always commented on the importance of her faith, her loving family and devoted friends, and always offered deep gratitude for each.
There will be no viewing at this time. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at a future date.
Ardent Hospice provided Jeanne with excellent care and with the utmost kindness and compassion as she transitioned from her earthly life to her eternal life.
